durabilty info on fords 6.4
The reason ford dropped the 7.3 is it couldn't meet the New Emesions standards for 2003 the same reason cummins went to common rail. Also I've been to the huntsville assembly plant and saw the new 6.4l before it had been publicly realesed around Feb. The block is a punched out version of the 6.0. In fact they were running them down the same assembly line. I too hope that ford has worked out the problems because we all know what chevrolet done for the diesel motor in the 80s. Don't even ask me about how many bad 6.0l were on the floor where they were sent back to the factory.
Gosh Darn what a long post!! We have two 06' Furd F550's for our service trucks. I have racked up 10,000 miles on mine since I started there in the middle of October. So far so good. Oil changes at 5000 miles. I pulled into traffic the other night on the way home and a guy was moving over in the left lane to go around, he was not real close, so I stomped it and it took off. He ended up moving back into the right lane. I was impressed that it moved that truck along that good. It's got a fully loaded service bed, big miller welder/generator, air compressor and all my tools, hoses, hose machine and on, and on. I generally baby it though, unless I need to get out quick or something. You guys are scaring me though, I better make sure my phone is charged at all times or I better keep a good pair of walking shoes with me!!
The 06 and 07 psd's are much better. I wouldn't worry about it. My boss has a 06 f350 with the 6.0 just hit 100k the other day 0 problems since he bought it, and I'm happy for him. No truck troubles means happy boss

I have to disagree with you on the 06', 6.0's being any better. I've only been broke down on the side of the road once in the last 10 years and I was in a 06' F-250 with 3000 on odometer, and a dealer tag in the window when it happened. The 6.0's run great, when they're running. The thing that bothers me the most on the 6.0's is the throttle response and turbo lag. The Cummins and D-Max are much better off idle when you need to get moving quickly. Punch a 6.0 from a dead stop in real world daily driving, without power braking to build boost and you'll see what I mean. That's probably why Ford is going with twin turbos on the 6.4, so they won't be such a pig off idle.

The amount of problems from the 03-04 engine builds compared to later on is less. I'm not saying they are prefect. yes They have very bad turbo lag and that is why they are going to a compound turbo setup which will probably have almost no turbo lag. If I sound like I'm defending psd's all the time I'm not, just saying that there is lots of people with the 6 oh's that never have problems and don't even know the past history of them.

I guess I'm still just a little bitter on the 6.0's. Back in the summer of 05 my boss told me I was finally going to get a new company truck and I could soon say goodbye to the old 96' C-2500, 6.5 Turd-Diesel that I'd been driving for 4 years. Corporate normally only allows us to buy GM products, but I convinced him that the 06' Ford, 6.0s were much better and they had the bugs worked out. I really did not enjoy all of the crow I was forced to consume.
Turbo Lag. Hmm, totally electronic VVT or whatever, electronic injection... I think NOT. That is programmed into the ECM.. The "lag" is self preservation and is down right confusing. There are thousands of service trucks around here with the 6.0. Without the auto, the torque curve doesn't even come on until you are over 1900. Definitely hard on the clutch and makes the truck undrivable as a stick unless you shift it like a gasser. I sorta like having full torque once the tach passes 1500..
Tehy are starting to introduce the 6.4, he said They will have to remove the cab or take out the motor to do injectors....
