Mine depends on who else is fueling around me when I fuel up. I don't know of any diesel 'runaway's' happening lately, but I sure don't want to try it out and see if mine will....

So, if there's anyone else around, I shut it off.

In the last 5 years I've shut off maybe a dozen times to fuel up.

3 situations:

1) Exhaust too hot...let it idle until <~325F then shut down
2) Son (3 mo) in truck on cold day...leave it idle & heat on
3) Wife (or me) inside and hot outside

When he gets to be 4-5 shut it down and take the keys out!
I just saw a video on FOX news where a guy did that and the kid put the vehicle in gear and it ended up on it's hood!

The kid or the truck?

My 3-yr is usually with me but his seat is way too hard to squirm out of and the buttons are too hard for him to push. Half the time my wife can't release the harness.

Don't know for sure but heard that the air fuel mixture ratio on a diesel at idle is around 60:1, at load 20:1. Also let my 93 idle while waiting for a ferry for 2.5 hours and my MPG didn't go down any.

The stickers that say shut off your engine are for Gas vehicles not us for fear of fires. As far as in VA. you do not have to shut um down you need to let the turbo cool down first any way.I keep my truck ruining unless I am going in side for somethings and sume times I just Locke the doors thin and use the re mote to UN lock win I come out.

I leave mine running but can the gas fumes be harmful when sucked in?

I shut mine down as little as possible ...If I know I ran the truck hard and keep an eye on the exhaust temps .
I try not to let the truck idle for more than 10 mins ...but if I'm running in for coffee or some where I am in and out and can see the truck , I have picked up a spare key and one of those quick disconect key couplers and I will un hook the main key and take the others and lock the truck while it's running .
That works for me !

I let my truck run at work some time as much as 12 Hours and the fuel gage says maybe an 8th used. My miles per galen go way down to 6 but I am not cold or hot.
