About the same story as treehuggers, a few people ruining it for the majority.

They are called "World Improvers."
They see something that is completely none of their business and set about to get the government to take away money and freedom from everyone in order to right their percieved wrongs. Unfortunately, the government always messes things up with unintended consequences which cause more problems than they solve.
The federal government takes over more and more of the education of children and they keep spending more and more money on it and it keeps getting worse and worse.
Anybody with an ounce of brains would know that diesel fuel isn't something you want to drink or inhale but that doesn't stop the world improvers from attempting to fix a problem which doesn't exist.
BOHICA!

It's a matter of perspective.
Look at the following picture.
You and I see a diesel powered truck who's turbo hasn't built enough boost yet to "clean up" the exhaust.
That victim on your right side and everyone else having to sit in the cloud in traffic, just see a polluting truck.
Guess which vehicle will immediately pop into their mind when increased environmental regulations are discussed.
I'm not saying we can't do it occasionally.
Just remember......actions have consequences

I feel a LOT safer driving a diesel vehicle.... Diesel doesn't put out the CO like gasoline does... diesel is not as flamable, less likely to explode. Also mixing in 6 gallons of bio per 24 gallons of petro diesel brings down CO, hydrocarbins, particulates, etc. Biodiesel is a great thing and should be used more.... Also the diesel gets better mileage than its gasolien counterpart.

From the Department of Energy
Biodiesel reduces nearly all forms of air
pollution. Most importantly, biodiesel reduces air toxics and
cancer-causing compounds. Pure biodiesel can reduce the
cancer risks by 94%; B20 will reduce that risk by as much as
27%.There is no sulfur in biodiesel, so biodiesel won’t contribute
to sulfur dioxide emissions or poison exhaust catalysts.
B20 has 20% of the benefits of pure biodiesel. B20 can
also reduce the soot and smell of diesel exhaust.
