Cummins in a demolition derby.
On labor day weekend I watched a demo derby in my hometown and a guy actually ran a straight '61 Imperial with a non IC'd Cummins, an automatic and a Dodge dually rearend. The thing ran all the way through the heat, but I thought this was foolish since all of his running gear was worth about 5 times as much as the grand prize. It did look pretty cool seeing the black smoke rolling out of the single hood stack on an old hardtop though.

I just felt kinda sick. You know, when a vehicle got turned in for "cash for clunkers", they had to destroy the engine. They drain the oil and add a mixture of water and sodium silicate. Then run it till it seizes. Usually about 10 to 30 seconds. Ouch.

If I recall correctly, it was a 5spd, so being a 2wd, 5spd, it would easily be able to get over 20mpg, so if shouldn't even qualify for cash for clunkers. But, since the EPA never gave a diesel rating, they can turn them in, and an engine that would outlast 3 or 4 gasoline engines would be destroyed.
I'm glad he saw it and saved that one, but it still makes me angry that the others are probably already long gone. Hopefully, they'll realize the old Cummins was way more reliable then what they traded it in on, but it'll be too late by then...

Here's what happens http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...082002462.html . The clunker program will actually result in more clunkers being on the road longer because many more cheap parts are available for people that choose to kep running their clunkers

And the fuel savings from the clunkers program overall (getting people into more efficient cars) amount to two hours of domestic consumption.

Leave it to the government. There are people riding around (or broken down) in a carbureated, guzzling, 1984 junk car, unable to get to work if they have a job who can't afford something more decent or better on gas. So the government takes tons of perfectly good cars getting 16 mpg and sends them to the crusher to the dismay of frugal people and used car dealers. They should have at least resold them to people with real clunkers on the cheap to help those people get to work and they could've recovered a grand a car and not wasted all the good resources and cars. It was so frustrating at the junkyard the other day. Every kind of car I own x20 in better condition being crushed. Now I gotta shell out big bucks for parts at tghe store while all those parts were thrown away.It kills me.

I don't know what you guys are so uptight about regarding the demo derby car with the Cummins.
The engine will certainly survive the derby (or several for that matter) and it can always go back where it belongs someday...in a pickup truck.
