Commonly used acronyms and terms
12v - The 12 valve variant of the Cummins Turbo Diesel, consisting of 1 intake valve and 1 exhaust valve per cylinder. The 12v can be found in Dodge pickups from '89 until early '98 model year.
24v - The 24 valve variant of the Cummins Turbo Diesel, consisting of 2 intake valves and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder. The 24v can be found in Dodge Pickups from mid '98 until present. 3kGSK - 3000 RPM Governor Spring Kit 4BT - 4 cylinder, B series, turbo. This is a 3.3L or 3.9L 4 cylinder version of the engine found in the Dodge pickups. These are popular for retrofitting into other vehicles as they share the same torquey and reliable characteristics as the larger 6BT, but without the size and weight which allows them to be transplanted into a wider variety of applications with less modification. 4kGSK - 4000 RPM Governor Spring Kit 5.9 - Dodge pickups from '89 into '07 were 5.9L inline 6 cylinder engines. 6.7 - Dodge pickups from mid '07 to present are 6.7L inline 6 cylinder engines. 6BT - 6 cylinder, B series, turbo. This is the 12 valve engine found in '89 - '98 Dodge pickups. ABS - Anti lock braking system AFC - Aneroid Fuel Control. Controls off-boost fueling in order to minimize black smoke prior to the turbo spooling APPS - Accelator Pedal Position Sensor BDC - Bottom Dead Center, usually referring to cylinder number 1, is when the piston is at its bottom most point in the stroke. BHAF - Big Honkin' Air Filter BOMB - Better Off Modified Baby! BUMP - Bring Up My Post CDL - Commercial Driver's License CEL - Check Engine Light CPS - Crank Position Sensor CR - Common Rail, where the injection pump pressurizes a fuel rail that all injectors are connected to, and the ECU tells the injectors when to fire, as opposed to the more traditional diesels that have an injection pump that also acts as a fuel distributor. CTDs in Dodge Pickups starting in '03 were all CR. CSS - Crank Speed Sensor CTD - Cummins Turbo Diesel DRW - Dual Rear Wheel, a.k.a. Dually DTR - Diesel Truck Resource, a.k.a. the site you're currently looking at ECM - Engine Control Module ECU - Engine Control Unit EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation EGT - Exhaust Gas Temperature G56 - The 6 speed manual transmission found in CTDs after mid '05 GAWR - Gross Axle Weight Rating. The weight capacity of an axle. Getrag - The 5 speed manual transmission found in the 1st generation CTD GCWR - Gross Combined Weight Rating. This is the maximum combined weight of the truck, any contents including passengers, the trailer, and the total weight of the loaded trailer. Grail - The Holy Grail of trucks. This means different things to different people, although it is usually a '98 12v, often with a manual transmission, sometimes with a short bed. GVWR - Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. The GVWR includes the net weight of the vehicle, plus the weight of passengers, fuel, cargo, and any accessories added to the vehicle after purchase. The GVWR is a safety standard used to prevent overloading. GSK - Governor Spring Kit. Inside the Bosch P7100 injection pump there are governor springs that limit maximum RPM by working against centrifugal weights. Stiffer springs hold the weights inward until a higher RPM, thus raising the RPM governor of the truck. IFS - Independent Front Suspension IRS - Independent Rear Suspension ISB - 24 valve CTD KDP - Killer Dowell Pin LWB - Long wheel base, referring to an extended cab truck with a long bed NV4500 - the 5 speed manual transmission found in CTDs beginning in '94 NV5600 - the 6 speed manual transmission found in CTDs from '99 until mid '05 OP - Original Poster P-pump - A "street term" so to speak, for the Bosch P7100 injection pump P7100 - the Bosch built inline injection pump found on '94-'98 12v CTDs. PCM - Powertrain Control module PSD - Powerstroke Diesel RWAL - Rear Wheel Anti Lock Brakes TC - Torque Converter SBC - South Bend Clutch SWB - Short wheel base, referring to either a truck with a regular cab and long bed, or an extended cab and short bed. TDC - Top Dead Center, usually referring to cylinder number 1, is when the piston is at its highest point in its stroke. TPS - Throttle Position sensor VE - The Bosch built injection pump found on CTDs from '89-'93 VP44 - The Bosch built injection pump found in 24v CTDs from '98 through '02. VSS - Vehicle Speed Sensor WOT - Wide Open Throttle |
