cj 10 with 6 cylinder diesel
cj 10 with 6 cylinder diesel
a friend of mine bought it and i have to admit it is pretty cool. it was a aircraft tow rig in the airforce. well he dropped it off at my house knowing i would get fond of it and buy it off him. i took it out for a test drive, the 6 banger fired up easy enough but it still likes the glow plugs when its cold. i have been getting all these wild idea's on what to do, i have a set of axles out back from a 3/4 ton i could throw under it and convert the t case back to 4wd operation. and making a custom bed would be a piece of cake. but now i am getting second thoughts.
i am not sure what the motor is, it runs well and doesn't smoke at all. but it has a butter fly in the intake track and i have never seen a diesel with that. it has a inline pump like a small skinny 7100. if you open the butterfly it rev's up just like a gasser. anyone know what motor it has in it. i think it is a 86 or 87 model. and this thing is heavy as in 8900#s it has a big weight under the little bed in the back and a dana 70 or 80 dually rear end with single wheels on it.

well it looks like it might be a nissan diesel. found this page and it was just what i had in mind.

What kind of rear-end ratio did it have?? 22:1?
(20mph with a B-52 in tow!)
Maybe the butterfly was to reduce the cylinder's air charge and make it idle smooth like a gasser???
Maybe a "dual fuel" engine??? Reduced air for better gasoline/air ratio?
I have seen engines fitted with automatic emergency air shut-off valves in case it gets a snort of flammable vapors... But that's weird!!!
You've got us curious now!

The throttle that you see is likely the governor; the normal regulating one. Mercedes and others used this succesfully for many years. The throttle makes only a very slight reduction in atmospheric pressure and the rack responds to keep that pressure very much equal at all times. If the throttle opens and the pressure drops downstream causing the fuel rack to increase until the intake air volume increases enough to drop athe pressure across the throttle again. I think it was a Bosch system. I had it on all the naturally aspirated MB's that I had. Worked fine. No troubles except for the mechanical linkage after a few million cycles. Change a few ball joints links and carry on.

goto http://p085.ezboard.com/btunfs Several of those Nissan guys would love to have a Nissan diesel to transplant into their trucks. Since we cant buy one in the US.

if the cj 10 you say is a millitary truck could it be a Continential engine? I thought those were turbocharged, at least in the 2.25 ton uniits they are. Is it a mulit-fuel engine?
as for "butterfly valves" in the intake, look at a modern 6.0 psd and you will find an electronically-controlled intake throttle working in conjunction with an EGR valve and a varible vane turbo. All for emissions.

I could never see much other than the filters on top. Everything else is hidden or buried under so much stuff. Even fan belts.
Very true there - hard to see anything under the hood of one of those trucks. I wonder if one day manufacturers wsill start sealing the hoods of thier vechiles to keep us - the customer - out.
