changing from a drop in filter to a screw on

I was talking to a man that pulls a lowboy for a construction company and he told me that they convert all thier 5.9s to fleetguard screw on filters.

I guess my question is why? I kinda like the drop in better because the drain is a bit easier to reach and in an emergency, you might be able to clean out the drop in and get going again whereas the cartridge you're stuck. Either way, I don't think it's worth the effort or expense.

I put on a fleet gaurd spin on. I can't stand cartride filters. Per Fleet gaurd it flows 3 times more. 90 GPH compared to 30ish. It filters better. 99.5% of 10 micron compared to 98%. 93ish% of 5 micron compared to 86ish%. And it contains 36 grams of debris compared to 28 grams. It has a nice little water drain on the bottom and they are cheap. Easy to keep it under the back seat.

All that and it take standard fittings and does not need any elbows. One thing to keep in mind is a filter head may be cheaper with different size ports. Enough so you can afford to buy the fitting to reduce it and still be cheaper .

Oh yea, imagine the access to the engine without that big old **** filter in the way.

Any part numbers? Is there a fuel heater in the stock one that might be lost in the new setup? I HATE cartrige filters if only for the krap that gets left in them at the change out.

FS1001 is the P/N for the specs I relayed. I choose this fileter for size constraints. Overall hight was my issue.

I am not sure of the filter head. They come with several different thred(holes) in/out. They are female and you have to buy fittings to hook your lines to. I got 7/8 threads (#12 fitting) because it was over $10 cheaper then the 1/2". You still have to buy the fitting and the price of those are nearly the same (with-in $1).

I ran 3/8" hose from the tank to my Holley Black and 1/2" hose from my Black to the filter. Then 1/2" to my VP. With this you don't need any elbows or banjos. Also you only need one fitting that goes from -8 (1/2") to 12x1.5mm (at the VP)

Yes there is a fuel heater lost, but in AZ it doesn't matter. Check with any fleetguard dealer (ie. Cummins, Kenworth, Pete, ....), they can order of usually stock both. The head is used on a large number of heavy trucks. 1-800-22filters I think is the Tech support # for fleetgaurd. They can tell you specs and P/N for filters and heads.
