Canadian buying a truck in the USA?

Ok, so my dad and I went out and looked at an 07 Megacab 4x4 6.7 CTD yesterday and he liked what he saw and how it drove but the problem is the price. The one he wants (laramie, loaded) is $63K!!! So with that said and the Canuck dollar being on par with the American dollar, he wants to go to the states and buy a truck there to save some money. I've heard a few stories that American dealers are starting to shy away from canadian buyers on new vehicles and that the auto manufacturers are voiding warranties once the truck is registered in Canada.

Whats the deal with this here? We'd like to save a good chunk of cash if we can but if the warranty is void, then it complicates things a little bit.

I think you would have to go down to the states to get warranty work done but your right about saving lots of money

Unfortunately, when I was considering mine, I just didn't have the time (~4 days total to get down, pick it up, and drive back) as work was so busy.

Yes, the word I got from DC was that the warranty is canceled on an imported vehicle to Canada from the US. Here's the question I asked myself: $12-14K savings on a vehicle after GST and Register Import Fee is alot of warranty. Will one use that much in warranty on an engine with a proven block / a body style that has been around for a few years?

Let's just say if I could do it over again or the next one, I'd seriously get into contact with Dave Smith Motors in Kellogg Idaho. Word from them was they don't sell vehicles that were going to be imported into Canada. I say don't tell them - email to see if they have or can get what is wanted in stock and show up with the cash. It takes 72 hrs for the paperwork to clear US Customs...have to pay GST at Canada Customs and $26x.xx Import Registration Fee. Enjoy truck and savings?

P.S. Make sure you get the procedural details from US Customs at the place where you are going to cross. I found out that procedures for each one are slightly different (eg. King's Gate vs. Sweetgrass). Could delay you're crossing.

P.P.S Owner of the vehicle must cross with the vehicle.

I believe there is a "Class Action" lawsuit in Ontario, involving a number of auto manufacturres including Chrysler. Sure hope the courts side with the consumer.

I called Dave Smith Motors a while back and I explained what we're looking for and then I was asked where I'm from... I told the sales person, "Alberta, Canada". Right then and there I was told that they don't sell to Canadian citizens anymore. I sure hope that lawsuit sides with the consumers, this pricing is rediculous as far as I'm concerned.

I believe they're doing that because some people were buying numerous vehicles and reselling them up here.

Seems like the person who just wants ONE truck is the one that gets shafted. I worked it out on both the American and Canadian Dodge websites, same truck, same options and the American version is cheaper by almost 10K. Guess a guy could try and walk in on a Canuck dealer and offer that in cash but I doubt a guy would last long in said dealership.

If you're going to fore go the warranty anyway, why not just buy a used truck from a private party?

Most used trucks cost more up here than buying new from South of the border. Most used trucks are bagged as well - super hard to find a good one. I was extremely lucky with the deal I got on mine. One of those referral type things with the sales manager.

I know a guy who imported a canadian CTD to the US

back in 1991, because of the exchange rate. They honored the warranty going the other way.

I have been told at the local Chrysler Dealership that they will no longer honour the warranty on a US vehicle imported to Canada. Also heard that most of the manufacturers (Dodge, GM, Ford, Toyota etc) are telling dealerships that if they sell to a Canadian resident that is a big no-no as they want to keep the 2 market places segregated. I think if you can get a US address to use that is the way around and figure out if the money saved is worth being your own warranty but hey if you are going to put a programmer or anything on it you take that risk anyways at least this way you are paid to play. I have trailered a couple of used vehicles from the states back home for a guy at work so am fairly familiar with the process if you want to PM I can get you more details. Good Luck with the decision.

I was thinking of the used market in the US. Seems like it wouldn't be hard to find a used truck in the US for a decent price.

Another way around it is to have a US resident buy the truck for you then "resell" it to you in a month or so. Of course you would have to find someone you trusted.
