Can my Diesel fuel be too clean?

I would like your opinion as I have been double filtering my fuel for some time now, I run it through a 2 micron Racor 510 before the factory filter ... seems as the Racor catches just about all of the contaminants but can the fuel be too clean? or do you think it's Ok I have gone through 1 pump at 85K miles (double filtering was for Mexico trips) I also hooked up a electric pump before the Racor makes changing the filters easy just turn the pump on and fill it up and tighten it down ...

Go the Cummins website and email them. They will respond and answer the question for you. That's a very good question and I'm interested to hear the answer.

You can't get it too clean. It's good that you've added a pump though, because a second filter could add too much restriction otherwise.

I just sold a 1993 DD with 236,000 miles on it and used two fuel filters. I had a Racor installed before the LP and the OEM in place. I used 2 micron filters on the Racor and 24 m on the OEM. I have a friend that put 175,000 miles on a 1992 DD using two filters as I did. He now has a 1999 with 130,000 miles using the same set up. No problems encountered with either truck.

Almost sounds like it could possibly extend the life of some of the component's?? I'm at 178K and still starts and runs as good as when it was new! I just herd someone mention too clean of fuel was not good either?? I did find that hard to believe though. I'll try Cummins to see what they say for the hay of it .....

That’s like having too much money, a girl too pretty, having too much fun or my diesel too clean. That should be in a song. [guitar] [duhhh]
I think you might want to keep an eye on the first pumps pressure. If it went out it could cause you a problem. I would look for a positive reading at WOT after the first filter.
I don't think your fuel can be too clean.
Just my $0.02 worth.

I agree that you can't filter your fuel too well.
I'm a boater (fuel filtering is always an issue with boats) with a 270 hp Cummins (Bosch 7100 pump) , and I subscribe to several diesel engine and boating forums. All boats run 2 filters....I use a racor 900 series with a 10 micron element ahead of the engine filter.
The only thing you need to be concerned with is restriction. My set up passes the test, an when I first installed my engine I had a 2 micron in the racor and that passed.
Only problem with the 2 micron is that it needs changing more often than the 10....I can tell when the elements clogged....engine surges at cruise rpm (2000 or above).

Ah yes the boaters ... I totally understand about double filters there fuel tanks have a way of growing things in them creating havic I always tried to keep my tanks full when in the slip less condensation build up ..... good the 10 micron works for you.
