Calling all diesel mechanics, engine ID needed

Guys, here are some pics of an engine I bought last summer. It is a Perkins built by Cat, the only ID I can find indicates it was built 11/2001. I got it at a School Ag department auction, didn't really need it, but it looks to be new and I only paid 500 bucks for it. I originally had some demented idea to stuff it in a truck, but it is too tall as far as I can see, or want to think about. I was told there should be an ID plate, but it obviously has been removed, nor can I find any other stampings. A buddy in the construction business said it looked to him like it would be in an excavator, backhoe, etc.
Head casting is 3712H14A-1, Injection pump is a Stanadyne LO DB4427-5249.

Can anyone ID it and tell me what something like this is worth, and the best place ot sell it would be? I don't really care if I make a ton of money, I just don't need the thing, and I am sure the components would be worth far more than I paid for the whole thing.

Thanks for any help!

Bullfrog, it is brand new, came directly from Cat and was given to the Vo-Ag dept.

I don't know if it is a runner or not, I would want to go through it anyway, because who knows what kids of kids had it apart, and how they put it back together.

Do you know the model designation of the Engine?

That engine is a Cat 3054.... Either a late "A" or an early "B"... From the pics, it looks like an industrial application engine. Notice the small line going into the intake?, thats a small fuel line to inject fuel into the intake track, the fitting has a small spade connector for applying power to it. It is an intake heater. On turbocharged applications such as yours, the check valve in that heater can leak, causing boost to enter the fuel system and cause an intermittent dying/fuel system problem.
Being that is has the Stanadyne pump, I'd tend to think that its an "A" engine.
The reason it has no ID plate is because it was donated from Cat to a college or school, and is supposed to be used for training and instruction purposes only.

Looks like it might have come out of an Olympian generator set.

Look for and ID tag on the side of the block near the injection pump.

Yes Perkins engine, well built, usually last a real long time.

Thanks guys, it is indeed a 3054, thats a good start.

Now, and ideas what you would ask for the thing? I mean I would probably sell it for what I had in it, but it would also be nice to buy that EMS conversion kit for my front end.......
