I am new to the forum so please forgive me if this is in the wrong place or if this question has been answered a million times before. I tried a search but I think my terms were too broad. Anyways I am thinking about purchasing a '96 Dodge 2500 with a Cummins engine, manual transmission, 4x4 and 131K miles on it. I am going to use it to pull a 2 horse trailer that weighs 3500 pounds unloaded. I am interested in finding out from the forum what kinds of things I should look for when I see the truck? Is there anything in particular to be wary about on an older truck like this? This is an individual seller not a dealer and it supposedly has new tires, a newer clutch, a new vacuum pump and new left front wheel bearings and rotor and pads. I am a newbie to this truck thing and I am just trying to educate myself. Thanks for your help.

 

That model truck is suppose to be excellent. Has a few things that need attention.Like dowel pin and such. Look at this site for 2nd. gen and 12 valve section. Many people on here know much more than me.

 

Welcome to the site. Use the search function as this question has been asked before. I would CarFax the truck, look for rust under the doors, find out how much front-end work has been done (track bar & ball joints), and ask if the KDP has been taken care of (search this one.) Also the front brake rotors need frequent replacement due to the 1200 lb engine sitting on top of them, and they are expensive. Research and use only CG - rated 15W-40 oil and if it's not been run on synthetic - do not switch it over. Avoid any orange oil filter, especially if it says "Fram" on it, and be certain the clutch is tight. Check for Load Range E tires on both front and rear (they should be all around) and check for looseness in the steering.
