Burning/using oil question..

I have a friend that has a 2000/2001 F-250 Ford diesel, with under 100,000 miles.. He is doing oil changes about every 10,000 miles and using Delo oil..

At 7,200 miles he had to add about 3 to 4 qts of oil. Does this seem excessive? Im thinking the oil is just getting quite then by that mileage - BUT to me that seems to be borderline high usage for that many miles...

Any thoughts? thanks.

Ive put in 1.5 qts in 9,000 miles (Amsoil HD Deisel Oil) and I work her pretty hard. 3-4 qts in 7200 miles sounds like abit to much.

Had a frient of mine at work that was using alot of oil in his PSD. No oil on the ground, not an excessive amount of smoke. After $2-3,000 later, he found out that somewhere in the hevi injection system, oil was seeping in and being atomized with the fuel. This PSD had under 180,000 miles.

Guess what - he bought another PSD [eyecrazy]

Sound excessive to me, I do oil changes twice as often as I have to because the truck has to last me a long time, but I've never had to add ;D a drop of oil between changes.

I think it's probably the injector 0-Rings giving way. Not a real bad expensive part to replace, about $8 a cylinder I think. Just very time consuming to open up the valve covers and pull out the injectors. A good way to check this is to get an oil sample and put drop a drip of it on a clean white sheet of paper. If you get two rings ( a black one on the inside, a red one on the outside) then it's likely that the oil is actually leaking into the fuel past the 0-Rings. I think Ford's spec for oil usage has to be more than half quart per 800 miles.

And I also suggest that he check his dipstick more often. He shouldn't be adding more than 2 quarts a time or his engine is running low on oil.
