Blew up my mule

last saturday i was riding in the 6 inches of snow in 4wd about half throttle when all of a sudden i lost all the power(the emgine was still at the same RPM) so i quick let off the throttle and it was really loud like knocking and it sounded terrible. so i quick shut it off and my dad told me to start it back up. so i did he could hear it about 500 ft away. knockin and bangin. what do you think it is? BTW it is a Naturally aspirated 40 hp diesel 3 cyl. thanks.

Re:Blew up my mule

Well, since you lost the drive power and the engine was still turning at same rpm, and you could start it back up.........it sounds like whatever couples the engine to the drive may have blown up. A busted flexplate, clutch disk, etc. will make a heck of a rattle and bang if it lets go.

Re:Blew up my mule

Kawasaki makes some pretty good stuff.

I would take the clutch cover off and remove the belt, then try and start it up. You could have done the clutches in or blown the belt all to heck.

Need to confirm what the problem is before you tear the engine down for no reason.

Were you the one that thought about using a air compressor to act as boost?

Re:Blew up my mule

I agree with what formula said. You mentioned that you had changed the oil the day before. That may be a clue if it is engine and not drive train. If you also changed the oil filter, was it the correct type? If not you could have oil starvation. Did you physicaly check the oil level after the problem started or just go by how many quarts you put in at the oil change. Was the new oil you installed a synthetic? If you had been running regular oil and switched to synthetic there is a remote possibilty that some gung came loose and plugged an oil passage.
Before you start stripping the engine try and isolate the drivetrain from it and then start the engine. If you have an oil pressure gauge check that the oil pressure is normal. if changed (higher or lower) that could be a clue.
Whatever you find, keep us posted.
