Question A Big Rig Question

Mostly out of curiosity, what kind of diesel injection systems do brand new big rigs generally have? Is it HPCR like the third generations, or something more traditional because they probably have lesser emissions requirements? Thanks!

Cat is still using their MEUI system. It's an electronically controlled version of the traditional cam actuated injector. Cummins has a similar system on the big engines.

There are more than a dozen injection systems for the big boys toys. Wanna is right on with CAT and they seem to have the best of the bunch.

detroit with the 60 series is using EUI's [electronic unit injectors]
mack has an EUP [electronic unit pump- cam driven individual pump, hp line from it feeding injector] ]setup on their engines [one version also has hpcr E-3 smaller engine]
MB has eup's on their engines
volvo has eui's
cummins on their large engines has a system that is similar to eui's [they also do use eui's on some engines... ism, n14], but the injector is completely mechanical [you could have the injector stripped with simple hand tools in like 5 min flat] and the system is called HPI-TP. cummins and scania developed it together i believe.
cummins also had/has the caps system which is very similar to the vp44 system on the 24v engines [isc and isl application]

vw is also now using the eui's on their new TDi PD [pumpe douse???] engines

most always had mechanical pumps...now they're all starting to run with electronic fuel injection to control emmissions, idle time or different idle spray patterns and to reduce noise.. cat pattented their HEUI system

I work for a major tmp and most of what we use are elec. cont. detroit, mercedes, cat. cummins. As far as HP they all do pretty good, in my job I get too drive 20-23 trucks everyday and the 600 cummins dohc and the c15-c30 cat w/twins are sweet. Just my .02

N-14 is a great eng, havent seen one in a long time,(in a new truck), they said it was going to cost more to convert the old eng's over w/the emissions stuff I know the n-14 block alone,no radiator or anything is $16,000. Those were the engs you could tweak yourself before all the electronics

N14 is what we have on the farm. It's a mechanical system, which is what we prefer. I've got five trucks with electronic systems that are worthless after six years of heavy use. N14's are still being built and sold. For a while, they were the engine of choice by the military for FL70 trucks.

The N14's are no longer built in on highway and possibly off road applications. The new lineup for about 2 years now has been the ISB, ISC, ISL, ISM, and the ISX.

If your talking about the FL70 Medium Duty Business Class Freightliner, they never offered an 855 cu in. engine. Its way to small. About the biggest you can go is a C8.3 or ISC in that model. However, the FL120's did have them.

The only mechanical injector N14 was the first version called the N14 Centry. This used a "smart PT pump" with an actuator valve, rail sensor and used STC timing by means of either air or hydraulic (oil)

The N14 Celect and Celect Plus used a electronic unit injection setup. These are push rod engines with a rocker for each injector, however, the solenoid at the top of the injector is what lifts the ball off of its seat and allows the pressurized fuel to be sent into the combustion chamber.

Those ISX engines do run well. However, from a service techs standpoint, they are really a pain to work on. Definately not as reliable as the 855 BC's and the 855 N14's. IMO, the N14 was the last "good" engine Cummins built for Class 8 trucks.

The HEUI system is/was a joint venture between international and Cat, both hold the pattent and international is good at using it, look at all the ford trucks Cant wait to see this new 13 Liter they come out with next year

Did'nt CAT make a C-16? Or did it stop at the C-15? We have a 575HP N-14 in our KW Toterhome, Its got the Roadranger 10sp. , straightpiped, BUT NO JAKE BRAKE , I've never seen a Jake on the N-14 are they even available?
