Best year for consistently good fuel mileage?

Doesn't the nv4500 have issues with the 5th gear nut????
I think the 12 valve is a great idea. However I'm not too impressed with the bodies, front ends, and electronics on the truck. Ain't the motor, its what its in.

It does, but there are a number of ways to fix it. Here's my method:

There really isn't much in the way of electronics in a 12 valve, nor have I heard of anyone having problems with what little electronics there is. Ball joints are certainly a weak link, I'll agree with that.

I know a few who have had fuse links blow frequently thats why I mentioned it.
My dream is a 4bt in my 86 w100 4wd (to replace the slant 6). Looks like they are very strong compared to their weight. If I had the money it would be a 12 valve.

The overhead in my 06 48re consistently read 17 in town and my 08 68rfe with DPF and EGR reads 13 normally 13.5 at best. Id recommend an 05 - early 07 5.9. Theres a dealer in Warrenton Va, I think its called Warrenton Select, that sells a lot of Cummins powered trucks.

Thanks for that last post (and all the others, as well). I will check with that dealer. I'm finding that there aren't all that many Diesel QCab long beds, with the manual out there for sale right now.
I'm going to stick with the manual trans, no matter what year I end up with. I am seeing too many adds that indicate "new trans" or "rebuilt trans" with under 200K miles on the odo for the automatics. Since I'm not looking to "bomb" the truck, it doesn't appear that there is a lot of fuel mileage difference between the 12v and the 24v, from what I'm gathering here.
How are the gen 2 bodies and interiors holding up, compared to the gen 3s (maybe I should start a new thread)?

As a rule of thumb, more power takes more fuel. The older trucks make less power and generally use less fuel on the highway at a cruise speed. Im quite happy with my '04 getting 20-21 highway and 15-17 in town. I know the gasser 4x4 quadcabs dont come close.
