I have a work truck that needs a little help. I found the fuel rate adjustment, but is there a governer adjustment like the p-pump on our Cummins and other inline 6es? I'd hate to start taking off every cover I find to do it. I was thinking of just 200 more rpm to make it drive just about right. It made a big difference on a Ford F-800 with a 478" 6cyl after its fuel was cranked up. Stock sucks! Black smoke in moderation is ok, and still passes the snap throttle test. Any ideas other than swap in a Cummins?

Both adjustments are there under the same cover. I will look in the service manual on mine and give you a more complete answer. I have adjusted both my fuel rate and the rpms. When I got mine it was turned way up and gear bound at 65 mph. I changed the rear, made the roadranger an OD and lowered the rpm "high idle" to where it is supposed to be.

I cant be changing a rear end gear set, it's not mine. Plus it's an auto trans-Allison MT653. Truck is an '83 F-800 utility truck. It tops at 61mph, but that wasn't the concern as much as better rpm shift points. I work around 4 of these things and they sure fall on their face quick, but accelerating is much better with more fuel!

YOurs is probably set at 2800, don't think I would take it much over 3300. You would be pushing it I believe.

actually it won't hit over 2700, on a downhill I keep it 3k or less. I'll go see if I can fiddle with it today & see what happens.

Ok sorry to take so long for this but wanted to refreash my memory with the manual. YOu know that this is a backyard adjustment. The specs call for a test light and setting the "set point" to do it properly. The adjustment nut is under the two bolt cover that is almost ovel on top of the injector pump. It should be the cover that is the furthest foreward on the pump. I believe that it gets tightened to raise the rpms. Do it very slowly though, like a quarter turn to see where it is. And make sure you count so that you remember where it was for the spec plate. Also make sure the tach is working good or I would not do it without an accurate tach. The high idle should be higher than it will pull on the road so you may have to go into it a couple of times to get it right. I would also check the spec plate and see how close the rpms are now to the spec.

Yep I found it...it even says"high idle adj." stamped into it :. Right next to the fuel rate cover(twards the rear of the truck). It's hitting 2900 now, which is just enough to make a big difference in accelerating with the Allison. I did it in 3 increments, so I didn't get too high. Thanks again sir, now if the company I work for would put twins on all our diesels 8)
