Any reasons not to buy a new 5.9 now?

Great forum folks, first time poster!

I've been around diesels for many years and I export fire firetrucks around the world, so in a sense, I'm not a newbie.

I'd like to purchase a new Dodge Cummins with six speed manual tranny, Quad cab, six and a half foot bed.

I haven't selected the cab model yet and perhaps some here could offer recommendations.

The upcoming 6.7 Cummins has had a lot of press lately. However, I hesitate to purchase a newly introduced engine based on past experience of horrors on all the forums.

If I do purchase a 5.9, will I be 'limited' or 'burdened' with the new emissions and fuels coming out?

Or should I just wait another year?

I've done a lot of searches on the forum and would appreciate some straight forward answers as there is a lot of solid experience here.

Thanks in advance.

BTW, I live in Denver, drive the highways and off roads, sleep in the back of the truck under a shell and use the truck to pull small loads (6,000 lbs) and for off road use.

With the big discounts and incentives, shop around and find your new truck. Good luck and let us know what you find.

I agree with Davey. This is the end of the 06 model year, and you can get some good deals on 06's that they are trying to move out. The 5.9 is a proven motor, and it will be more than plenty for what you need. The mega cabs are nice, but take some getting used to. If you tow a gooseneck, you'll have to get a hitch extender so it does not hit your cab. Pay attention to the gear ratio, the 410's are great for low end power, but they are murder on the highway for fuel milage.

On the other hand, Cummins is a very good company, and I trust their motors. So far, so good with the new 6.7. Some one on the site already has one, and he does not have anything bad to say about it. Last I heard, he had over 1k miles on it.

Good luck!

First, welcome. There are lots of friendly folks here that will give good answers to any question you could think to ask.

Unless you want one of the promised 5500 cab and chassis jobs, or the Asin auto, I think snagging one of the great deals on the 5.9's right now would be a great idea.

You wouldn't have the unproven particulate filter and exhaust recirculation stuff, and the 5.9 should do just fine on ultra low sulfur.

Good luck, and let us know what you choose.

Trucks manufactured after Jan 1st will be required to have an exhaust particulate trap that has to be maintained and replaced.
If I was going to buy a new truck I'd do it before New Years.

Thanks for all the beta guys!

I was on the phone with a sales manager that I know and he said the supply of six speed, 5.9, short beds is very scarce.

All the Laramies are gone and the SLT's might be found but he's going to have to look hard.

Evidently the word has gotten out, at least here in Denver.

He quoted me $32,700 plus tax (with all the rebates and incentives currently available) if he can get one. Not a bad price!

Let's see what unfolds.

What salesman doesn't try to convince you that there's a shortage of exactly the thing you want?

Check Henson Dodge in Madisonville, TX. They will do an internet quote, plus have "On-line" specials. They always are aggresive on price & inventory.

Bonham Dodge in Bonham Tx. Has the best deals I found. I even shopped both Elway stores in Denver. Call Bonham and ask for Bryan in the internet dept. I just got back to Fl. with my new 06 QC 6sp 4x4 LB. I drove out with my trade and had no surprises. They have a huge inventory. Good luck with your new truck.

I again appreciate the info.

My Dad passed away on the 27th and I've been down in Florida attending to the funeral.

I usually deal with sales managers as I'm a dealer and can obtain invoice or better pricing.

Forgive the bold as I'm on a borrowed computer and don't know how to turn it off.

I checked in with some Dodge dealers here in Palm Beach County and they had no six speed 4 x 4's.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

I've been kind of kicking around getting a different truck, too. It's kind of tought to guess how the 6.7 will be.

Just bought what your looking for last night, 2006 Dodge Laramie 4x4 3500 Quad cab,6 speed, short box all the bells & whistles, power sunroof and even power little back window. Huge discount up here in Canada.
Only have 94 miles on it so far but a sweet little truck, had some seat belt warning lights and bells trouble today but will have them fix it in the morning. Probably a fuse.

6.7 should be a good motor. I think everyone's afraid right now because it's "different." In the end, you should probably even be able to squeeze more power out of it due to its larger displacement.
