Question Any body ever heard Duetz diesel

Just got a new Sewer Vacum truck for the county I work for. A Cummins aux engine was in the spec but we ended up with a Duetz diesel.
Has any one ever heard of this, if so is it any good. Any info would be good.

Tanks Tom

Yes. There was a tractor dealer in my home town a few years ago that sold Duetz tractors. They are a German company. All of the engins used the same parts. They just added more cylinders to get more horse power. I went and looked at them, but I do not know much more than that.

Deutz is a great engine, most being air cooled, and will last forever with very little maintenance. You see them in compactors, pavers, underground mining equipment, etc. anywhere you need simple engines that last forever.

Don't know about the newer Deutz's but the older ones were great. The ones I knew all had air cooled engines and were quite large tractors. One thing I remember very clearly is that they had the quietest running diesel I had ever heard. I asked why and was told that it was because they had a different combustion chamber.

many of the older ones were IDI's. we had an idi at school [V6] that was very quiet running [air cooled version] but when we checked the timing on it, it was way out retarded making it quiet. this model was to have timing at 21°btdc and when we first started working on it was timed at 5°btdc.... cylinder labeling on it was odd too... standing in front of the engine [looking towards the flywheel], #1 was on the right [engine left] right next to the flywheel [#3 left front], and #6 was right up front engine right [#4 right rear]...

Arrow Boards

We have them at work on some of our traffic arrow boards. Being air cooled, they work good as a generator motor to power the bulbs in the arrowboards.

Talking of air cooled diesels reminded me of another brand of air cooled diesel tractors that were common in my area when I was growing up. It was the Italian "Same" and they produced 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 cylinder diesel tractors. The bigger ones came in 2 and 4 WD. Don't remember any serious problems with them. I do remember, particularly the biggest one having a really good sprung seat which made driving them very comfortable.

They use them for hydra laser pumps around here. Air cooled and will run for ever.

Thanks for all the info. It sounds like a good engine. I guess that we will not raise a stink about it then. Tom

Back in about 73 or 74 when I was working as a gas jockey, a KW cabover come in for fuel. As I walked past the front of the truck, I was amazed to see the front of the trailer through the grill. No radiator. The 8V92 that was originally in there had died and the owner had re-powered witha 12 cyl Deutz. Said he had lots of power and it was as dependable as anything. Not sure where his heat came from, but I remember that to this day. Seems to me there were quite a few of them in the oilpatch. They have been around for years in farm tractors, and those who run them are extremely loyal to the air cooled engine. Power to weight, reliability and ease of service is what is claimed. Rick

Just thought of something to add. The Deutz engine is not a newbie. They have been making diesel engines for close to 140 years for many different applications such as trucks, tractors, marine, generators and more.
Guess that means that they know a thing or two about diesel engines and to last that long, they must be good.

They had internal combustion engines back in 1864?

Looked them up, and found this quote though:

For more than 140 years, DEUTZ engines have been providing innovative solutions to your power needs. Today we are meeting your increasing power demands while conforming to government requirements for environmentally friendly engines, thanks to our state-of-the-art technology built into every engine made by DEUTZ.

Some of the engines are oil cooled. We have a Duetz on our vac trailer. The oil cooler is as big as the radiator in a pickup.

We had 2 of them at school. both 5 cylinder models. Rated at 100HP. Very easy to fix, you just need to rember the cylinder order is backwards. #1 cylinder is on the flywheel end.
