alternate fuels
OK first of all, I hope this isn't a stupid question, but as the old saying goes " The only stupid question is the one thats not asked"
Can these cummins engines run on cooking oil?
I happened to catch a show the other day in which "Daryl Hanna" the actress was being interviewed. She has an old el Camino with a diesel engine in it. She said she burns old cooking oil in it.
I'm not sure if I really want to smell like old fries, but the way fuel prices are going up, who knows what we'll be into soon.
Thanks

yeah they burn it, IF, and i say IF you can get it 1 clean and 2 warm enough its better for the vp44 than regular diesel. but like i said its got to be clean, and the viscosity has to be the same which means raise the temp. And to do that, you have to have a dual tank system. one tank for your diesel and one for your veggie oil. Some kits out there use your engine coolant to warm the oil but..... by the time it gets back to the tank i dont think its warm enough anymore. So and electric heating element would have to be placed in the tank.
The way you have to run it is to start your truck on diesel, drive it till your engine gets up to operation temp, or until your veggie oil is up to temp( in tank temp sensor) But then you switch your tanks over to veggie, and then run on that, UNTIL a couple 5 miles or so from yoru destination then you swtich back to diesel to flush the veggie out of your system
The reason for the flush is that when it cools it will get thing and probably clog some stuff. Easy enough to fix, but why deal with it?

although thats not always the best option, another ( if your into saving money and what not) is makin ur own bio diesel. There are quite a few sites around that discuss it. Basically you take your cookin oil and make it into a fuel that your engine will burn without modifications. http://biodiesel.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x?a=cfrm&s=447609751, one good place to start
