Like Alpine, when Scheid did my first rebuild @ 218,000 miles on my 96', my #6 piston looked close to what he posted. If you are "pouring the coals" to an old 12 valve, they definitely will show some wear.
One other thing, anyone here doing a rebuild had better check that cylinder head REAL WELL! All of my valve seats were cracked so bad I had to replace the head!

Mine had 176,000 and the main and rod bearings looked as good as the new ones we put in. The crosshatch was still in the cyinders also. I had the machine shop hone them out any way because it was already out the truck and was only $10 a cylinder. Here was my number 6 piston.

AlpineRam, Those pics you posted of the piston w/ the skirt shot is exactly what mine looked like when I tore mine down. I picked up the block last week from the machine shop w/ two sleeves and .030 bore job. They had to deck the block .010 as well. I got the new camera I knew I was getting for Christmas so I'll be posting those when I'm home. Right now I'm in Oregon for vacation. Mine was a combination of continuous overheating, boost, and overfueling, hence the previous owner. And mine was not sleeved either. My 8.3 6C in the diesel pusher motor home isn't either. Merry Christmas ya'll.

18 grand for a new engine?? Is there a reason why they are charging you 3 times the cost of a complete engine you can find elsewhere with little to no miles on it???

Dealership prices
I guess the dealership just wants to make a good profit. Maybe the dont want the job, I dont know, but at that price they wont get the work, obviously.
Again, if anyone knows of a good shop in Oklahoma city or Des Moines Iowa that you would recommend let me know. I can look up the local cummins dealer but I was hoping to find someone with a private shop and better prices.
