General Diesel Discussion Talk about general diesel engines (theory, etc.) If it's about diesel, and it doesn't fit anywhere else, then put it right in here.

4bt repower

hey all, i have been thinking of doing a long term project. the project would consist of a frame off resto and a 4bt re-power for my 83 Elcamino.

i have some questions.

how much heavier/lighter is the 4bt compared to a 350 chevy?

would the TQ output of the 4bt be too much for the stock GM 10 bolt?

is the 4bt a mechanical engine or computer?

is there both IC and non IC models?

This site is great for swaps. The 4bt is mechanical. most are available with the VE pump, some out there with the p-pump.

the 4bt is mechanical and yes it would be way to much for the 10bolt, the min. needs to be a ford 9'', but a dana 60 would be better

I suspect that the 4bt will protrude above the El Camino's hood about 10". Is that what you had in mind?

Oil pan to top of engine is 27" at the shallow part of the pan, 33" from the deep part of the pan. Thats on a 6bta. A 4bt will have the intake up and over the valve covers from the turbo, so that will increase the height. Weight of the 4bt is around 800 lbs or so, big block range. From a stock 4bt, I think that the 10 bolt would hold up fine. Output is in the 105hp and torque in the 250 range on the VE, although the p-pumped ones (hard to find) put out more. With 250 ft.lbs. going through a slush box in a light vehicle, I think that rear end would hold up fine.

Some quick info, the numbers (4) is the number of cylinders, the B is the series, T is for turbocharging, A is for aftercooling. Those are the mechanical engines. The electronic ones are the ISB's, which will be common rail on the 4 cylinders.
