#2 heating oil vs #2 diesel fuel
 

I have about a 100 gal of heating fuel (#2 diesel) fuel. Can i use this in my diesel tractor? Is there any difference between the #2 diesel i buy at the pump vs what is delivered as home heating fuel?

Just the color and the tax. Be careful if you frequent stock sales or anywhere a lot of trucks assemble.

A buddy came out to mount his truck after being at the local livestock sale to find these fellers dipping fuel tanks, he was BUSTED! He had to pay a very hefty fine :o >:(

The heating oil I have delivered to my house says right on the receipt that this is "dyed diesel fuel, penalty for on road use". Now if it is in fact #2 that you have and you want to run it in your tractor, there SHOULD not be an issue. If you decide to put it in your truck and run it on the road, this is a different story.
I would ask how long it has been in the tank since diesel fuel will grow funny things in it if stored too long.

#2 fuel oil CAN be run safely in any diesel motor. But make sure that is what it is. If you have an outside tank, fuel oil companys often will dump kero into this, it will burn in your diesels fine just a little HOTTER.

It's legal to use anywhere except on a paved road. If you do and get caught, the penalty is severe! You can find marine diesel for about $0.80/gal, but #2 diesel out of a pump runs anywhere from $1.30 to $1.80. That's a hefty road tax....
If your plan is to plow a couple of fields or move a couple of bails of hay with it, NO PROBLEM. Just don't do it on a road paved by tax dollars ;D

As the others have said off road diesel can be run in on road diesel engines.....but the dye can get ya a hefty fine if caught using it on the road....my truck got topped off with off road diesel once (12 gals) the dye stays in the system for awhile in my case 3 complete refills....I travel thru scales and was very nervous until all traces of the dye was gone

After that we moved the off road diesel tank away from our on road diesel tank and painted off road only onto the tank

The word "paved" should read "public". It makes no difference if the road is paved or not, gravel roads, dirt roads, etc. are off limits. It is OFF road fuel...any (public) road. It can only be on a public road in vehicles such as farm equipment travelling incidently between fields, to or from the farm, to or from a place of repair, etc. It can be used in refrigerated trailers.

The last I heard, Federal citations were automatically $1000. If it is a State citation it varies by state. You'll be cited if they find ANY amount of fuel or residue in your tank.

I think somebody didn't read the question properly. The question was about a tractor not a truck. The answer is YES YOU CAN. Heating oil and diesel fuel are essentialy the same thing.

If they start giving tickets out to tractors running red diesel that are on a public road going from one field to another, I'm leaving the country. I do it all the time, and have never had a problem.

The law means that you can not run mit in anything that is registered or other words anything that you have license plates for. It is exactly the same stuff becuz the price of heating oil influences the price of diesel.

Hi,

yes you should be able to use it in your tractor diesel OK. The things to be concerned about are dirtand rust, water and wax.
Filter properly for sediment. Drain for water. Parafin wax will most likely be present in the heating fuel. This will be an issue in temps that go below freezing, otherwise OK.

The difference is the sulfur content.. Off Road (heating oil, untaxed, dyed, non highway - whatever you want to call it) is HIGH sulfur.. On road (clear, highway, lwo sulfur, etc) is low sulfur content as dictated by the EPA for emmisions..

You should be alright burning the off road in your tractor (assuming you mean farm tractor).. BUT on my compact tractor the owners manual stated to only use low sulfur fuel..
