1.7 L Cummins in a boat

A buddy of mine is looking at a 26' center console with an inboard 1.7 liter cummins. I told him he should buy it and put some stacks on it. Supposed to get like 9 miles/gallon, which is awesome for a boat. Cruises at 36 mph. I'd have to see it to believe it. Didn't know cummins made an engine that size, is it a good solid engine? What kind of performance stuff could you put on a marine engine like that?

No one's heard of a 1.7 L cummins? I hadn't either, but oh well, he could have been wrong about the size. (He drives an F150 ) I think it would be cool to have a CTD in your boat, you could launch it at the ramp and let it idle while you parked the truck. I'd have to mod it up though, at least some 6" stacks. After the boat and the truck, I'd have to find a way to get a cummins in the tractor so I could cut the grass with it.

I fish with a couple of guys who have the little cummins in their boats
One has a 21 foot angler and he gets about 8 nmpg
Another has a 24' skipjack fly bridge, a much larger heavier boat, I think he gets 5 or 6.
Excellent economy.

For comparison;
My 23' Striper only gets 2.5 with a 5.0 GI volvo, which believe it or not is pretty decent.

Those little diesels seem pretty nice to me.

I'd only be able to mow fields bigger than 8 acres, cause of the room I'd need to turn that sucker! Need to put some of those big bat wing mowers on it like they mow sod farms with, and run my exhaust up through the hood.

I think he's seriously considering the boat, I'll find out more details when he gets it. I'm trying not to pressure him too bad, I've been leaving him voice mail messages of my truck starting and idling. Can't get the turbo whine to record thru the phone though, but I'm working on it!

Those 1.7's are made for MerCruiser.

I have a 3.9 @112hp in my Shamrock, naturally aspirated and it just sips fuel. I can run for a whole week on the 90 gal tank of fuel. This is the site you should be looking at http://marine.cummins.com/ Click on products on the left.
