Common Rail Pressure code P-0148

I posted in the help forums and opinion says my lift pump is on its way out. I had less than a 1/4 tank of fuel and my truck has severe loss of power and stalls out every 5 minutes or so. Once I fill up the tank, runs prefect. Anyone seen this symptom before? Also, the smarty is back to stock so rule that out.

Hey saw your other post and sent you a message to see if you still have the problem and it looks like from this post you do. I have that same code from time to time. I thought it was the fuel pump but after having replaced it with an Airdog I still have the problem. I'm now testing with the Quad II off. If it's not that I hope it is only crap in the tank. What was weird is that the truck threw no codes the last time it happend. Also, so long as I never get near 1/4 tank I never have the problem.

jim - I have a strong feeling is crap in the tank plugging up the fuel strainer for the lift pump. the problem is gone for now, but if it comes back, I will drop the tank for a good cleaning. I have put in some unfiltered off road thats why I think its intermitently plugged up.

1. OTHERS DTC’S PRESENT
With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Are any other DTC’s present?
Yes >> Repair other DTC’s first.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL).
No >> Go To 2
2. FUEL LEAKS
Ensure that the fuel level is above 15% using the scan tool.
Visually inspect the low and high pressure side of the fuel system for fuel leaks or damaged components.
Do you have any fuel leaks or damaged components?
Yes >> Repair the fuel leak.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
No >> Go To 3

3. FUEL CONTROL ACTUATOR
Check for a mechanically stuck Fuel Control Actuator (FCA). Using the scan tool, actuate the fuel control actuator.
NOTE: The fuel control actuator will only click when cycled off..
Do you hear a click from the actuator when you cycle the actuator off with the scan tool?
Yes >> Go To 4
No >> Replace the fuel Injector pump.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
4. FUEL PRESSURE SENSOR
Using the scan tool, monitor the fuel pressure reading from the fuel rail pressure sensor at idle and at 2000 RPM
Is the fuel rail pressure reading higher at 2000 RPM than at idle?
Yes >> Go To 5
No >> Replace the fuel pressure sensor.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
5. HIGH FUEL PRESSURE
Using the scan tool compare the fuel rail pressure set point with the actual fuel rail pressure.
Is the actual fuel rail pressure higher than the fuel rail pressure set point?
Yes >> Go To 6
No >> Go To 9

6. CASCADE OVERFLOW VALVE
Perform the no trouble code test 9*fuel pump return flow test9. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
Did the fuel injection pump pass the test?
Yes >> Go To 7
No >> Replace the Fuel pump.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
7. CHECK VALVE DAMAGED OR BLOCKED
Check the fuel drain line check valve in the rear of the cylinder head for signs of damage, blockage, or debris.
Is the check valve damaged or blocked?
Yes >> Repair the cause of the damaged or blocked check valve or replace the valve.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
No >> Go To 8

8. FUEL RETURN LINE OBSTRUCTION, DAMAGED OR DEBRIS
Check the fuel return lines for signs of obstruction, damage, or debris.
Are the fuel drain lines damaged or blocked?
Yes >> Repair cause of high fuel drain line restriction.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
No >> Go To 9
9. LIFT PUMP FLOW
Perform the no trouble code 9*LIFT PUMP FLOW TEST9. (Refer to 9 - ENGINE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
Did the Lift pump pass the test?
Yes >> Go To 10
No >> Replace the Lift Pump.
Perform POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST VER - 1 (DIESEL). (Refer to 8 - ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC
CONTROL MODULES/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE - DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING)
10. PRESSURE LIMITING VALVE
Perform the no trouble code test 9*PRESSURE LIMITING VALVE ON THE FUEL RAIL FOR INTERNAL LEAKS9.
Did the pressure limiting valve pass the test procedure?
Yes >> Go To 11
No >> Replace the Pressure Limiting Valve.

Mine is at the dealer right now getting worked on. They said they can not run all the tests because I have the Airdog pump on there. Because it flows a higher rate than stock all their readings are off and then won't be able to tell whats going on. They were able to check a few things like the Fuel Control Actuator and it's working. So at least it's not that. I've told them to go ahead and drop the tank to see if there is junk in it. While that is something I could do myself, I really really don't want to! If there is nothing in it, then they want me to go back to the stock pump to run the tests. And I'd rather not do that as well.

Just to follow up on my history, the first two times it died I got the code, then last 3 times it died I got no codes. The last two times it died I had the Quad turned off. It's done this over the course of about 8000 miles.

Funny thing, he did tell me I need bigger injectors because of the higher fuel flow, I don't think I need to go there yet. LOL

Heard from the dealer, my tank is clean!
Going to change out the Fuel Control Actuator. The mechanic feels if it's not that then maybe an injector could be on it's way out but at the very early stages of it. But aside from the current problem it's been running strong.

Lightbulb Just a thought...

I don't know about the newer trucks, but on the older ones, it was not uncommon to have the coiled plastic fuel pickup tube in the in-tank unit rub against the bracket until it had a hole. Fuel delivery would be just fine until the tank level reached the hole, and the fuel system started sucking air.
