VEG oil and what needs to be done?
Ok so i met a guy who gets veg oil for free and strains it through a coffee filter to get the chunks out and he runs that in his old benz with nothing else done to it. The guy was kinda goofy and he offered me all i could ever want but i hemed and hawed cause i dont know too much on what else needs to be done and the fact that i dont have fuel heaters or filters or anything like that. long story short i let him throw 5 gal. into my tank with 30 gal of reg fuel and it seemed to run normal smelled kinda like taccos but thats about it. he says u dont need to worry about heating it up because A. im in CA and it doesnt get that cold here and B. he wont take oil from anywhere that uses crisco because he says thats what makes it get all yucky in the tank.
sooo questions to u guys that sound like a good idea or stear clear. i mean beats payin for it but im not about to screw my truck up because i wanted to save a buck.
thanks guys

I run 4 gallons of filtered veg oil in every tank in my mercedes. i filter my stuff down to 1 micron which is over kill for the old meredes but in newer diesels i would never run non-heated oil and no less than 1 micron.

If you want to do it you should do a conversion to a two tank system. People do run a blends, and well there are more varibles and not enough real information to calculate the risk. Your 12V engine is not the same as the old mercedes(indirect injection) The mercedes is more forgiving of fuel types.
That is not to say the 12v is not forgiving though. Personally I would keep the VO less than 25%
Use at your own risk!

I've been mixing in filtered WVO to my diesel for a while. I can't say the exact ratio but it's ~10-15%. I run WVO in my second tank after it goes through a heated pickup, heated filter and heated line from the back of the bed to the fuel pump
De-watering and filtering is important before you put it in the tank. Once in the tank you have to get the oil up to about 130F before injection to be safe. Id filter down to 5micron absolute before using the stuff. Look for a good quality used oil.. something changed frequently so the color isnt dark. Google for 'crackle test' and do that on oil you want to use.
If youre going to get a system Id recommend frybrid, they seem to have the best setup and theres one for the dodge specifically.

I collect the oil with a rig i made using a 50 and a 5 micron whole house water filter. i pump it into the barrel in the back of my truck and then pump it into a holding drum at home running it though the 50 & 5 again. the holding drum has a band heater on it and i let it heat to 220 for 3 days and then settle for a week. i then pour it though a 1 micron filter sock 2 times and its good to go.
Make sure your not using hydrogenated oil...Ask whoever your getting it from if it is hydrogenated or not. McDonalds, BK, Wendy's...all those guys use hydrogenated so be careful. Chinese Restuarants are usually the best places to get oil...anything oriental uses high quality oil most of the time.
A recent call to Cummins Tech Support told me that the FS-1253, the fuel filter/water separator that's on my truck, is rated to filter down to 20 microns. Why doesn't Cummins (Fleetguard) try to filter fuel any finer than that, such as 1 or 5 microns? Also, the typical "spin-on" filters used at most fuel stations & truck stops are rated for 10 microns. Is 1 or 5 microns just overkill filtration for at 12-valve P-pumped Cummins?
