SVO/WVO kits...
 

Hey all, I'm gonna be getting an SVO/WVO kit in the very near future. Does anyone have any direct experience with any of the ones that are out there that they'd be willing to share? Thanks in advance!

That's awesome! You're the third person that's told me they've done a DIY setup. I'm starting to get extremely curious about this route.

I would love to know anything you'd be willing to share.
I guess I'm most curious about WVO sources & stories along those lines: successes, failures, recommendations.
If I were to go the DIY system route, as opposed to the ready-made kit route, what components would I need & what kind of cost am I looking at? Others have quoted DIY system costs at half the price of the ready-made kits on the market.
How many miles have you driven on veg?
Why do you think more people aren't doing this?

I've mostly bought my WVO from private folks that have a surplus. I've got some from restaurants, but most around me have contracts with the pros.

Lots. 3x 1000mile, plus some 600mile trips. WVO is best for long trips. I've got a 90gal tank for WVO. Can carry 55gal drums if need.

It's a PITA. Can be hard to find fuel. It's dirty, messy to work to filter. Takes room to store. You're basically driving a rolling science experiment.

Start off with a tank. If you don't like WVO you can always fill it with Diesel.

Get some good fuel valve and a filter. You'll need them to use with Diesel too.

Now you need heat. A heated filter and flat plate heat exchanger should work in most climates.

Hose in hose (HIH) is best, but I didn't go that route.

The 7.3L passes the fuel through the heads to feed the injectors (as I understand). This is a good thing for WVO. More heat (if at operating temp).

aluminum and plastic don't seem to react with WVO. Brass will (I have brass fittings).

Water in WVO will settle after time. Water is bad for your injectors. Don't use the last 1/4 from your settling tank.

How much did you generally pay, if you don't mind me asking?

What kind of climate are you in? What are your winters like? Roughly how many freezes do you get per year?

So water & WVO do in fact stratify. The water settles at the bottom, right? So when I'm getting WVO from a source I need to not stick the hose towards the bottom of their tank, right? What other source advice can you give.

I only have second hand info on this stuff, but have heard / seen good results of the Frybrid brand system used on gen 2 Cummins.

If you are not mechanically inclined a kit may be the only option for your truck but that won't help you on building your processor.
