Noob biodiesel questions
New to making biodiesel, my first batch was a disaster (I jumped in with out testing, lesson learned) so I figured I'd swallow my pride and ask some questions before I go forward.
First question is Titration: I'm using potassim hydroxide flakes. I used Mikes recipe on http://journeytoforever.org/biodiese...html#titration . I guess I'm wondering if the flakes are diffrent then lye. And if so, what adjustment do I make?
Next question, mixing the methoxide mix: Can I go too long? I'm using an appleseed processor with a cone tank as a settling/washing tank. I've read mixing from 30 min. to 2 hours.
I understand settling should be 48 hours, I imagine this is not something that I would think can be over done.
Lastly, washing: I've got a slick bubbler. After removing the reactor mix how much water do I add to wash? I'll be making 20 gallon batches for the time being. Do I need to use distilled water, or is tap okay?
Thanks in advance for your help. I'm looking forward to getting this going and running my truck on WVO and Bio.

forget most of the info from JTF..its out of date
the titration solution is made the same way using KOH or NaOH(lye). put 1g into 1 liter of water. turmeric the spice makes a great indicator and its cheap. the colors will go from yellow to red.
mixing time - you cannot mix too long. I have batch going at the moment, it'll be 24+hrs before its done.
settling - any from 1/2hr to over night is fine
washing - tap water is fine. for 60 gallon batches I use 5-10 gallons per wash. typical batched take 3-4 wash cycle.
