making bio diesel

does any one have plans and instructions for building bio diesel stills and brewing the fuel. I'm getting tired of watching the price of diesel go up $0.10 every week plus i'm gonna be driving alot this summer probably around 600 miles a week and $0.70 a gallon sounds alot better than $3.25+

below are some informative discussion groups although often they are diluted with beginners posting about a problem with a one liter test batch. a still is pretty easy to build, just various combinations of valves hoses, pipes, pumps, a heater. this book, http://localb100.com/book.html, has a lot of basics and plans, and while you could find all of that info in different places, it was convenient to have.

Didn't see the program you mentioned , but I've been looking at this for some time , I'ld would have been making my own for a couple yrs. now but being a full time RVer , no space , now with the cost of fuel I'm thinking it may be worth buying a place to process ,
The Girl Mark open source is to share the info then build your own for about $50-300 depending on how goood of a scronger you are .
Then when you look at a package system most are over charging , but starting at $2,500-8,000 for individual consumtions 40-100 gal a day .

If I'm not mistaken the one shown on Trucks! cost $4000, about the same price as 1333 gallons of #2 diesel.

Man, I wish I could become a home brewer of biodiesel but unless you know a recipe to make biodiesel out of trees, I think I'm out of luck. Still, you guys that're located in farm country or more specifically where they grow soybeans and other oil seed crops (I see you can even press your own oil with presses available online) should have a definate price advantage for brewing up farm country's finest and tastiest biodiesel. Have a 3-5 friend co-op to share startup expenses and keep things small and friendly. In the old days when you see all these tanks and equipment down on the farm you probably thought of moonshine. But these days it's probably for the thing that your truck drinks...biodiesel. Least you'd be more in control of your piece of earth than being at the mercy of BIG oil. And that'd be a great thing. You don't know how fortunate you are to have the raw materials readily available at a good price. All you need is some effort...
Good luck!! Chuck

Though I've never checked, these days and around here in an enclave of the enviro types that have known about biodiesel longer than Methuselah was alive I'm sure the cooking oil at these establishments has long been spoken for. My dad lives just out of Spokane and is on the hunt for prices on 55 gallon drums of veggy oil as there are several oil seed farmers in that area and who knows? Maybe new inedible oil for under a couple of bucks a gallon could be had....we'll see. When you're paying for the raw materials $.70 a gallon isn't possible. Still....at todays prices for #2 even making your own at $2.00 a gallon seems a BARGAIN. Anyway, it's something worth checking out....

A number of your numbers seem a little off , last time I checked the raw materials [ methonal & lye ] were about .40-.50 for every gal. of fuel processed plus waste oil [ free ] .
I was reading a study that the U of Mn. did for the state of Mn. , about 1998 , and the processers of the soybean meal were glad to get 1.00 a gal. for the oil , and were not taking any more soybeans [ at the time of the study ] , becouse at the time there was very little call for the oil and there storage for the oil was full so they could not take anymore soybeans from the farmers .
I bet that has changed.
The refiners around here get a $100 deposit for there totes when you order the biodiesel , the totes were 250 gals & 10 days ago the biodiesel was $1.89 gal.
a budy of mine gets his 500 gal tank filled by a fuel truck .
Heres a link to retailers of biodiesel , I would talk to them about were they get it then get a bulk tank and have the refiners deliver it .
