Fuel Additives..... need advise..Please

Yes I know this has been talked about on a number of threads, but i could do with some imput, from you all.

What fuel additives/ cetane boosters etc, do you use, and why do you use the product you use. I'm not intrested in winter additives such as antijel, as we do not have hard winters in the UK anymore.Just info on good everyday diesel fuel additives. The only readily available additives overhere are to help keep the injectors clean and nothing else, you can get(with some difficulty Lucas additives or Fortex).

Our fuel has a very low sulpher content now and it can only get worse and i want to help out thr IP with a bit more lube. What ever i decide to buy will almost certainly have to come from your side of the pond.

Or am I worrying for no good reason, any help would be appreciated. Thanks..Ade,

I've heard that the diesel in the European countries is much better that what we get in the States (not sure how true that is) that said I use Power Service additive all the time at a rate of 16oz. to 35 gallons, I use it because I think it will help my VP44 have a longer life than it might otherwise and to cut down on smoke some as I live in a city

I use a combination of Power Service and Marvel Mystery Oil. 16 ounces of PS and 8 ounces of MMO.

If you're ready for stuff that really delivers what they advertise, and can back it up with lab reports. I know...I know... be suspicious.

www.amalgamatedinc.com

Ask for the TDR formula....it's not described on their site. Call and talk to them. It's only shipped in 5 gal. pails, and even with shipping, it's ~1/2 the cost of Stanadyne in 1/2 gallon jugs.

I'm only a very satisfied customer with no interest in this company. I've used someone's additive since day one....140K. Red Line, Stanadyne, Howes, Power Service, Amsoil, and a couple of other's I can't recall.

I use Power Service additive as well for the Cetane Boost.

It gives my 12V MUCH MORE NOTICEABLE Throttle response and revving through out the power band!

I HIGHLY recommend it! (Now. If I could only get PAID for saying that!)

I use Rolling Big Power (RBP) additive. Good stuff! It's highly recommended around these parts! http://www.rollingbigpower.com/products/?&productID=6

What Chevron has to say about it

Aftermarket Additives It would be convenient for the user if a finished diesel fuel could satisfy all his or her requirements without the use of supplemental additives. Although this is most often the case, some users must use additives because the low temperature conditions in their region are more severe than those for which the fuel was designed, or because of other special circumstances. Other users feel that they need a higher quality diesel than regular diesel.

A large number of aftermarket additive products are available to meet these real or perceived needs. Some are aggressively marketed with testimonials and bold performance claims that seem "too good to be true." So, as with any purchase, it is wise to remember the advice, caveat emptor – let the buyer beware.

It may be helpful to regard additives as medicine for fuel. Like medicine, they should be prescribed by an expert who has made an effort to diagnose the problem. And they should be used in accordance with the recommendations of the engine manufacturer (Cummins says no additives are needed) and the instructions of the additive supplier. Sometimes indiscriminate use of additives can do more harm than good because of unexpected interactions.

Question

Well guys thanks for the imput, perhaps someone can chip in with what the ideal cetane # is required for our type of engine.

I know that the quality of diesel probably does vary from company to company and country to country, i'm sure our gas is of better quality than in the US, not sure of the diesel quality though, an number of oil companies are starting to add cetane to their diesel over here, and detergents, but our diesel has been ultra low in sulpher for several years. my truck has been here since almost new.

I have had to replace the LP, don't know whether thats from poor lubrication from the fuel or it reached the end of it's life because of the way it was designed or both. but if i can make the IP last longer, thats all i'm after. Having read Chevron's web page which Infidel posted, it makes you wonder who is telling the truth, each it would seem has their own axe to grind, the oil companies think their products are the best thing since sliced bread and can't be bettered, Cummins state no additives are nessesary, because their fuel systems last forever and the additive companies state the other two can't perform properly without their product.

Who is right or are they all right??

OWW my head hurts!!!!

From the Chevron link above, they show a Chart for #1 & #2 Diesel having a Cetane Rating of 40.

My personal belief is that Lucas is probably every bit as good as anything else there is, and since you can obtain it there, I would go with that. I know if the situation was reversed and that was all I good get stateside and you had all the others, I would be running Lucas. It seems to me that many of the over the road truckers favor Lucas. I personally have tried several brands, generally mix in some Marvel Mystery Oil, but just feel that while some MAY be SLIGHTLY better than others, the most important thing is to offer a little better lubrication to pumps and injectors.
