How long can diesel be stored in empty gallon oil jugs, without dissolving the jug??

Will it eventually dissolve the jug??

I know they don't hold up to lawn-mower gas for very long, okay for a trip from the station, but not more than a few days , or the jug begins to melt.

Proper 5 gal. fuel jugs are only ~$8-10 each. (I have 6 in the garage full of fuel <Poor Man's Aux Fuel Tank>)
Why not just use the correct storage container?

 

I have had diesel in a plastic one gallon mobil delvac 1 jug for 4 years that I use as an emergency back up fire starter at the camp site. Have never used it in 4 years and have kind of forgot about it until you posted. It doesn't leak but I guess I haven't opened the jug in 4 years either to see what it looks like.

 

we use the yellow jugs to fill our big red forklift. they hold up fine.

 

We use the empty 5 gallon steel cans of parts washer fluid to store diesel in.
