DE Speaker Likes Suspension of Fuel Tax

"How would you like a 23-cent-per-gallon discount when you fill up your gas tank this summer? House Speaker Terry Spence, R-Stratford, thinks you would like it just fine -- and he said Thursday that he is introducing a bill to suspend the state's gasoline and diesel taxes from June through September."

"The state tacks 23 cents on to each gallon of gasoline sold in Delaware and 22 cents on each gallon of diesel, and the money goes to the Transportation Trust fund for construction and maintenance projects."

"Spence said he has lined up bipartisan sponsorship that includes House Majority Whip Clifford "Biff" Lee, R-Laurel, Sen. Margaret Rose Henry, D-Wilmington East, and Sen. Charles Copeland, R-West Farms."

Only question is where would the state makeup for the shortfall?

They could start by not giving Big Oil multi-billon dollar tax breaks again this year.

All of these states in the Mid Atlantic are raking it in, record new construction rates, more and more tax base for properties, etc.
Property taxes alone around here have just about doubled for most people in the last 4 years. We are creeping up on Chester Co. PA and New Jersey stye taxes here.

Politicians are just pandering for votes in Nov with proposals like this.
It's a very short term fix that will probably result in new taxes elsewhere in order to maintain the roads.
