ditch duramax for Cummins

A truck at work has issues with using coolant, it's a 03 or 04 duramax. The dealer said we can drop $1000 on head gaskets but that might not fix it, so used, new, and trading options are being put together. The boss says he was told the Allison would need another computer to make it be able to talk to the Cummins engine computer on something like a 24 valve.

So, what does it take, besides mounts and maybe a bell housing, to mate the 24 valve to the allison and make them work together?

Do a google search for "Destroked", they will have everything you need to do a swap.

Not sure about $1k for head gaskets...a set of OEM gaskets is half that. Most charge $3-5k for the job. Easier/cheaper than a CTD swap, though.

Also, have it pressure tested to see where the coolant is going first.

Just got it back from the dealer a week ago, they couldn't find it, said head gaskets will run about $1000, but might not fix it. Also the injectors have never been done and this one is one of the model years they had trouble. The cooling system was staying pressurized, though, even overnight. Seems odd to me. You'd put 2-3 quarts of coolant in (to get it where it is supposed to be) when it was cold, fire it up, as soon as it warmed up it pushed it back out the overflow.

The plan is to run it til it blows or gets traded or the motor swapped, so we could probably do the work ourselves this winter if it's kept around.

The boss had the head gaskets changed, but didn't plane the heads or anything. The first time we hooked the stock trailer to it it blew them again. Guess the plan is to swap a fresh duramax in.
