bobbed DODGE M880/CUMMINS hybrid

hey, just putting a few pictures up of a build i started in june last year and i am chipping away at as time/money/other projects allow.

i started with a SUPER rusted out 1977 dodge,ex USAF-

i had a 1959 SUMB thrown in with a deal-and sold the flathead v8 from it

an unsuspecting 1997 6bta cummins engine was pulled out of a daf 145 box wagon.

the toughest part of the build has been making a bell housing to adapt the 6bta to the unimog type transmission.

the chassis is very high spec-portals-shrouded props-PTO driven 12,000kg winch-straight chassis rails-20 inch wheels-coil suspention.

That sounds like a project.... Welcome to the DTR.

Pictures would be cool, sound interesting.

finding it hard to i.d. my motor-it was built in england by cummins in 1997-which should make it a 2nd gen....BUT it has the VE rotary pump-which would make it a 1st gen?......any guidance?

probably an industrial engine. lots of them had VE pumps right up through the years. Only the Dodge automotive version follow the generations like you're thinking.

If you give me the ESN I can run it through the database and see what info i can get.

-thank you both, the engine serial number is 21291450-

i think the engine was made november 1997-i do know it came from a DAF 145 box wagon, rated at 150bhp,but the engine plate says 107kw@2500rpm.

it runs well enough but i plan to see if the K.D.P. needs doing and checking up on the pump timing.it has around 100k miles up.so will need a good session once i get the truck finnished.

Engine was built in Darlington 26 Nov 1997.

CPL2014-- a 6BTAA

Fuel Pump is actually a Bosch VP14

It appears to be a 24V industrial engine, rated 143HP by Cummins.

Engine configuration is :D403025BB05

Turbo is an old H1C design configured for water jacket charge air cooling.

I can get any part number for the thing that you can imagine, but I can't give you ALL the PNs-- that is too large an undertaking.

So for now, it appears you have a 24V industrial 6BTAA configured for a water-air charge cooler and rated 143HP.

If you have a *specific* piece of information you'd like, I might be able to help. But I can't tell you exactly what it was used for or who used it.

thanks for your time on this-the aftercooler is air/air-i was sure this was a 12v-the 24v have the one piece rocker covers?i,ll take the cover off and see how many valves i can see.

Well from the photo you posted it is most definitely a 12V motor, not a 24V. You can see the 6 small individual valve covers. And it is running a Bosch VE IP, not a VP14.

You can loose the cooling fan off the crank and pick up a proper fan hub to mount up where it is supposed to be. Will make running a radiator a lot easier if the fan is located properly. ;) You will have to loose the intake cooler pipes, but you would probably have to do this anyway to route the Air/Air cooler in front of the rad anyway.

thanks for that-it does have the 12 valves.the viscous fan has since been removed.i will be having the aftercooler re-cored and will need to custom fab some new piping for this.
other jobs i have in front are endless welding, shorten both the main and the PTO drive props, pull the motor and bench run it before installing the new clutch, and then lots of one off parts to fab, including fuel tank, hydraulic tipper gear, air tanks to mount, wiring, air pipes, brakes to do, lots to do-here,s a few shots of-the homemade bell housing ,the tipper frame and hinges, and .....it,s a tight fit between the houses, and yes,i did knock some of my house down to get the truck up the drive.[duhhh]
