1983 D350 Crew CTD 5speed

moving this thread here from the 12 V driveline section as it seems more appropriate. Here is the build 1983 crew cab 2wd with a gas 360 4spd manual, going to swap in a 93 12v with a 5spd getrag. Here are some pics of the build truck and donor.

Diesel fuel pump sending unit

Fuel tank had been dropped by the PO. there was no fuel pump sending unit. Are these readily available? What is best place to find one?
This plastic nipple was broken off. Not sure what this is.

You do not need to use that roughed up diesel fuel tank.
On my white crew cab. I just lowered the gas tank, emptied it, and re filled it with diesel. I then screwed in a diesel sending unit, attached the fuel lines and was ready to run.

If you can not find a diesel sending unit out by you and you want one, I have several on my shop shelf.

Great info. Does anyone make a diesel sending unit you can buy? They seem hard to find. I do not have one with the donor truck.

Wiring harness

thoughts on using the 93 harness vs the 83 harness. Thrashing cows had the great input that the 83 is analog and the 93 is digital. I was just going to see what all of you who have done this swap thought? Better to use all of the 93 or try to keep most of the 83? I prefer the 83 steering column over the 93. Can I use the 83 column for the clutch pedal reinforcement so long as I drill holes in it?

Honestly i I am looking for the easiest solution for the swap so if someone has a recommendation I am all ears. I plan to run AC and heat also. Cruise control would be nice but is not a must. The 83 has cruise control on console also

I used the '85 wiring and steering column in my white crew cab. That would be the easiest solution. I ran the coil wire to the FSS and most of the rest plugged in with a simple pig tail change or something as easy as an oil pressure sensor swap.
Then cable drive speedo and cable just threaded into the 29 spline NP-205...easy peasy.
I didn't concern myself with grid heaters, A/C or cruise control. Everything on the dash works.

On my '89 RC and '85 black crew cab the complete diesel donor truck wire harnesses, gauges, steering column, ETC where swapped over, which takes some time.

Yes you will need to drill the holes for the hydro bracket for the clutch.

Do you need the grid heater or is it not necessary?

I only drive my crew cabs in the summer so it is not necessary for me.
You could easily put it on a push button if you where planning on driving it when it was really cold out.
Wiring up the grid heater on a push button would be much easier that swapping out all the wires.

Progress

Cleaned up the seats.... removed 20 years of dirt and grime.
Got the trans back after a full rebuild
Pulled all the wiring harness, fenders hood front clip. About time to pull the motor.
I also had a question about the front end. I was planning to put 93 springs on the front of my 83 so it can handle the weight of the cummins. Are these a direct swap? Was gonna do the front end at the same time.

I can't see your control arms well, but a 1-ton should have deep pocket for the heavier cummins coils.

Progress has been slow due to weather. Pulled the donor motor
There she sits. Waiting for a rear main seal, front crank seal and oil pan gasket.
