6bt vs TH400 aka 475 build

I just found a th400 with a cummins bellhousing (4bt bread truck) and im ditching my getrag (sold! )
Im trying to find someone who has put one of these things behind a 6bt with atleast 300hp. i just talked to my tranny guy and he said under a grand and i can shove as many clutches in there, get a good pump, maybe manual VB(if we cant get line pressure up on his test stand) and a rebuilt torque convertor, all that jazz but i just want to hear some tried and true setups/ parts combo
it will be divorced 4wd in a chevy crew cab dually that will tow 15k at the most, wont see a sled. possibly lockup/variable pitch convertor also! i can only hope.

The bellhousing is not specific to the Cummins, you will have to purchase the block adapter to go from Cummins to GM pattern, and the bread truck ones have an 11 degree tilt built in. They do sell straight up adapters, but they are pricey. There was a guy on 4BT swaps that redrilled his adapter to remove the tilt, but I don't remember what his name was.

Finally, good luck with the 400/475 holding up. Clutch packs aren't the answer, being able to build line pressure down low is. That was the weak point with most of the bread trucks, the trannies, and that was with a 4BT in front.

th400

The th 400 built will do great, But no od will get old quick. I have a built th475 in a 87 v30 chevy , The only thing i do with this truck is sled pull and tug a truck ....and run it hard! I have a coan converter, manual vb,transbrake, 300m solid input shaft, and alto red clutches 2 extra in direct and low clutch packs. This has been a tried and true set up for me for over 7 years now. I did freshen it up about 2 years ago, I broke the bell housing off..and still worked good just made the ring gear hit the starter at higher loads.Turns out it looked really well, But i was swaping cases so.. This engine makes over 1000ftlb tq. Just no od and lock up tq makes for a poor daily driver unless the truck is geared really high, and most 4wd trucks cant achive that other than a first gen dodge. Good luck,Brian

Diesel th400/th475 do not require a vacuum source.
