tug-of-war techniques
I have an 05 2500 w/ g56 stock clutch, afe stg 2, mbrp exhaust, and a tst. Whats the best technique for when I go play tug-of-war w/ my buddys and their psds. I tried 2x2 4lo 4th gear and all it did was smoke the clutch and destroy the slave cylinder. whats the best techniqe w/out me smokin the clutch.

anyone, my buddys w/ psds keep egging me on, i dont want to loose this time
|
I was curious about the best tech. for autos??
|
With a manual, I'd think you'd want to treat it like a sled pull. In other words, get a double disk clutch and a heavy duty master slave. If you're going to play, you'll need to pay. I've got a South Bend Con OFE and I was told not to sled pull with it. With tug of war, I'd think that could be worse with someone pulling against you.
Good luck, hope you can whip the PSD boys. |
Hmmmm lets see,
Well for you stick guys, you gotta get your own technique on that, I am an auto man. SOme things to do before you hook up to your buddy, Pull your brake fuse. That way when you hold your brakes, they will not know it, hold your brake when they take off, when they start spinning, then you take off. Lower your air pressures for more traction, sneak some lead in. I have mounts on the old farm truck that puts weight right over the rear tires. I take the lead out of my race car and I also have spare stuff just for when playin around. SO I can add about 500 lbs total to the rear tires like that. throw some tractor weights in under or in the tool box, theres some more weight. Whoever has the most weight will usually win, unless you can develop more tire speed with more traction than the one with more weight. Just a few pointers... |
with my 6spd ive always used a low gear and 4hi (usually 2nd gear and the occasional first), get the chain tight, rev it out to about 3k rpms, and then the flagger says go, slowly and steadily engage the clutch, dont dump it so that you bog and/or stall, but dont go too easy or you will smoke the clutch or get jerked backwards.
if i go this route i really cant lose in 4x4. the only time i lost i was on bald michelin street tires, and was going against a heavily modded v10 ford dually, who was running 34x9 super swampers with a couple thousand lbs in the bed. and he was neutal dropping at a high rpm to get the initial jerk. (he told me he was stock, engine-wise, then i found out he had headers, intake, throttle body spacer, and some type of chip on it) if we went as my truck sits today i would drag him to the next county, oh well he is the only one to ever beat me and if i see him again ill get the bragging rights back |
hooked up tonight
I just tied up to an 06 psd tonight, cc sb 4x4 f-250. first time i went 4-hi cause we were in the dirt, no one moved and i wasnt spinning so i put it in 4 low and dragged him a little. He said he wanted to go to pavement so we tied up again same thing i took him down the street untill i slid off the road(it was wet) then we stopped, turns out ford boy broke his control arm cause he was hopping so bad. Best part of all it wasnt even the kids truck it belonged to daddy.. [nonono] What a fun night [laugh]

We used to do that all the time and it was always on pavement.
One nite a buddy of mine who has a 02 CTD QC 6 spd 4X4 dullay was talkin smack and my other had had this old 84 3/4ton chevy 4x4 with 4 speed and a built 355 (dirttrack motor dynoed 425 horses) told him he didn't care if he pulled him he was gonna try. They hooked up, got the chain tight and took off. That chevy just started burin all 4 tires (it had miller lockers in it) and levi with dodge just walked right off. Jeff (boy with the chevy) knew he was gonna get pulled it was just somethin to do one nite.I think he would have gave him a better pull if the fan belt hadn't came off 7600 rpms. |
for a stick, its gonna be hard to apply the right amount of power at the right point in time to get someone going. Its an art form for sure.
I have the auto, and whenever I go at it, Im in 4Low to ease up on the tranny first off. Having the higher attachment point is significant. Me, I tighten up on the chain and then go for alittle boost, power braking till about 1500rpm. when the word is called, I roll into the throttle and off the brake and keep the wheel speed down as low as possible, but still enough to make tq. Airing the tires down is a major plus in winning as you have more contact area which is important in increasing your coefficient of friction. More weight typically prevails, unless driving style is poor. Goodluck. |

I can't help with what gear to start in ect but try not to break traction. Usually the first to break traction will loose. Added weight will help along with having a higher hitch. Ive seen people with airbags start to inflate them and then just take off actually raising the rear of the other truck and decreaseing their traction and taking off.

oh and on a final note... if you do find yourself going to loose, dont back out of it and hit the brakes! Go out in style and floor it, atleast you will look better loosing that way, and on the plus side, you might chuck rocks, dirt and debris at the competition!!! [whistle]

I used to pull my 95 chevy alot (chip, headers, 454 throttle body, transgo shift kit, underdrive pulleys, locker in the rear, and a little more) and if someone every rode the brakes on me I just pop it in netrual till they stopped, get a little slack in the chain and then jerk the **** out them.
Where I'm from thats a big no no.If your gonna do it, do it right. If you lose you do like 2 stroke and go out in a tire smokin glory cause thats still cool. Best thing to do it just give it he11 and don't let put and be reay of anything to brake. |
