what is legal?

Im told many diffrent stories about what front axle weight is legal in indiana. The book says 12k, but lots of folks say they (IN DOT) dont use that and just make sure your 20k or less, and no more then max gross. My issue is, i have a "04 387, with just half tanks im at 12k. Peterbilt had to know this, right? in short, i dont wanna just assume and fill up and get hit with a fine

Axle weight rating and tires to meet or exceed that capacity is the standard everywhere.

Indiana is weird. I called INDOT one year before I was due to pass thru their state so I could find out exactly what I needed for permits etc. They either couldn't, or wouldn't, give me an answer except to say I should just come down and if I get stopped, THAT'S when I'll know what I should have had.

Several years ago the feds dropped the 12,000 steer axle limit in favor of the 20,000 single axle limit, providing you have the tires rated for the weight, with the states having the option to grandfather in the 12,000 limit. As far as I know Arkansas was the only state to keep the 12,000 limit, at the time.

You don't have a moveable 5th wheel?
