Ford F700 with 5 speed and 2 speed rear end
Looking to purchase a 1979 Ford F700. Truck has a 5 speed with a 2 speed rear end. I have never drove this type of transmission. Gear lever shows 1,2,3,4,5. I was empty so I took off in 1H but it seemed like there was only 4 High gears. I could not got into 5H. Is there a special way I need to shift the trans to get to 5H?

The tranny is a straight up 5 speed. You can split each gear using the 2 speed rear. The red top pull switch on the shifter changes the rear end ratio, up is high, pushed down is low. Even in high gear your only going to get 60 mph out of it. What does it have for power? 330 ford gasser or a 3208?
Scot I am not sure what trans the truck has. I think I took off in 1H,2H,3H and then 4H. But when I went to go into 5H it seemed like there was no 5. I am going to look at the truck again this week and I will get some more info on it.

Hey guys. Truck is a 5 speed. Typical H pattern. Running good with no issues. But here is another question for your big rig mechanics. Could I install a 9 speed tranny in place of my 5 speed? I would love to get the RPMS down on the truck when I am on the freeway. Or would Changing out the rear gears be easier/better?
