Detroit Diesel 50 PWM
Howdy All,
First post for me (YAY) Does anyone know where the PWM valve is on a D50 motor! I've looked everywhere! I'm Stumped! Its throwing Flash Code 63 which means short on the + Side however I cannot find it, I've spent hours researching, even trying to buy one so i can compare but no luck.. Thanks, Moose |
Welcome to the DTR, from what I can decipher (I'm not a Detroit guy so I may not be much help) the PWM valve I tied into the turbo setup to control the VGT nozzles (but that may be the 60 series setup too)
I found the 8 page troubleshooting guide seen here: http://www.ddcsn.com/cps/rde/xbcr/dd...SECM-03-83.pdf hope it helps or someone smrter than me can actually help haha |
Flash code 63 means that one of the PWM(Pulse Width Modulation) output wires from the ECM is either shorted to positive or a open circuit. I'm not familiar with the 50 series but here is a excerpt from a troubleshooting manual on flash code 63

I Forgot I even posted up here, Thanks to Everyone..
The problem is these engines have many applications. So far I've found the following 1 - PWM can be used to control a fan (Not in my case) - Fan is on the crank. 2 - PWM can be part of the Glow Plug System (Not in my case) - No Glow plug system, Uses Ether to start and pure compression. 3 - PWM is part of the EGR system (I dont have that either). This motor has the Detroit Ether start unit, I've ordered a new can just incase its a flag triggered by an empty ether can (Standard install on this application). I've read the DDR and D50 manuals, I cannot obtain the specific manual for the application as its on a bus and cities either throw the manuals away or staff take them and leave in their attic for ever :) |
