Custom air filter housing for C8.3L Cummins

I just recently purchased a 1994 motor home with a 8.3L 300HP Cummins. I just finished changing oil and filters but I am not at all impressed with the air filter setup on this coach. The filter itself seems fine but the air filter housing is such a tight fit that you have to compress the sides of the air filter to get it in and it looks like the housing has already been trimmed some to make it fit the filter better. In my mind, if there is no free space around the sides of the air filter, then the air flow is being restricted to the air inlet area and can be losing efficiency.

I currently run an Old Smoky BHAF housing on my '92 CTD and was thinking of building something like the stock pot air cleaner housing but on a larger scale; say maybe starting with a 30 gal barrel. :o

Any pro's or con's to building my own air filter housing with plenty of free flow space for the air? The motor home will already roll the black smoke and will bury the 30 psi boost gauge so I'm not looking for more power, just more efficiency.

Sure sounds kinda weird having to almost stuff it in there. Have you checked the books to see if someone over the years, has replaced with something else?

What the numba on the filter your using?

Bump for ya
