Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

You must have gotten hosed completely. I can do an inframe in house with a remanned head and turbo all parts from international for less than $6k. Just a head check at the machine shop and a good turbo i can do it for less than $4k. I had my local dealer do an inframe for me with a remanned head mid last year and it cost us out the door just over $7k. Thats US dollars.

Its not just US dollars, canadian dollars (CAN currently worth slightly more but irrelevant) Its location. you can't find cheaper than that anywhere in alberta from a dealer. Thats just the way it is. private with jobber parts sure. But not a dealer.

we talked to the service manager and he tried to tell us that rebuilding it was not practical and he wanted to put a complete crate motor in it, it was easier that doing all the work. when we asked him for an explantion he said with the hours that were on the truck that the heads would be toast and the whole cam and valve train would be wore out...... we insited they tear it down to have a look see at it and the heads wee fine but it cost $800 to have the heads shipped across town to another shop for an inspection, the whole valve train was in great shape ecept for one rocker shaft that they changed, 2 sections of the exhaust manifold were cracked so they swapped them out, rad got redone in that price tag also and aside from that they just kept adding costs on until they got to the 12G that a crate motor would have cost, runs good though haha

By the looks of the 8.3L/505CI in the Magnum tractors, they are real similar to the 5.9 but with a larger crank. I wonder if any parts interchange.

The 466 is a good motor. Keep oil in them and they'll run about forever. Get the Bosch rotary pump for it that they used in the farm tractors, they run a lot better than the inline pumps. The DT 414, 436, and 466 use a common block with a different crank for a longer stroke. The 466 I believe also has a different head that might flow better.

I can't say for sure but I think the DT 530 and 570 might be similar in size, but the bore might be larger as well. I think they were also only available with electronic injection.

If you can fit it, an N14 from 2000-2001 years is statistically the most reliable engine Cummins has ever made.

We track very closely the rate of warranty returns on all engines sold-- what breaks and how often.

The N14 at the end of its product run had about 20 years of continuous improvement baked into it.

Set it up to run <400hp and it will outlive you.

Really.
