Big Rigs Talk about other Cummins powered vehicles here. As a matter of fact, it doesn't even have to be Cummins, but it will be diesel! :)

What do you want to know. I was a marine diesel mechanic for the last 22 yrs.
The 1st thing I would want to know is why the turbo seized. Is it a dry stack? Or wet exhaust?

Now that's about the truest statement I have seen in a long time.

Detroit 6-71... 6 HP, 71 leaks.

Remove the Detroit and install a Cummins, but don't get rid of the Detroit. Attach a chain to it and use it as an anchor.

If you intend to work on the boat yourself, invest in a set of manuals. Look on ebay or similar site for a set of white three ring binders for inline 71 series. These engines get a lot of comments but they run and run and run with basic maintenance. Not many engines can have so much wrong with them and still get you home, or to shore. And there are ways to deal with the leaks. Is there anything specific you need to know?

They are disgusting, noisy, leaky, and they unfortunately won't quit.

I'm glad you took that in the spirit it was written. I like to joke around a little! I know the Yamaha, um, I mean DETROIT engines were pretty good in terms of longevity.

Hmmm. 6hp, & 71 leaks? You obviously haven't seen the marine engines. I've worked on 6/71's that turn out over 450hp. & they only had 3 leaks!

Only 3 leaks, let me guess, the head, the block, and the oil pan?

Anybody ever have one run backwards on you? I was driving a truck with an 871 grabbed the wrong gear, lugged the motor it bucked and jumped then started running backwards. That makes a nasty noise. Its hard to shut them down too.

I've seen that happen although not to me. Makes 'em smoke like heck through the intake. I always thought that was a 2 stroke thing but I understand a Mack engine can do the same thing.
