2003 Detroit 60 coolant issues

One of our trucks has a coolant loss problem. Coolant is comming out of the blow by tube. No coolant in the oil or oil in the coolant. What do you guys think a head gasket or a head cracked?

are you sure its coolant coming out the crankcase vent?

do you have fuel in the coolant surge tank? I'd lean towards the injector cups just off the top of my head.

opps I goofed, the coolant over flow is spewing coolant out of it.

Tomorrow will replace the rad cap see if that fixs the problem.

The Mechanic we use is saying it is probelly a head gasket, liner or a cracked head.

This motor has over a million km on it right now.

ya sounds like pressureing up. its not the rad cap. but cheap enough to try.

any of those that was mentioned is possible, and 1 or more counterbores could need to be cut too.

Sounds like a head gasket to me. Used to do a bunch of head gaskets on the series 60 when I cranked wrench's with them. Got to where you start your shift, troubleshoot it, replace it and run it across the dyno in a 10 hour shift. Have seen some pinholes in the cylinder liners on those too.

Just got thru with this VERY same problem, my 97 kenworth has a 12.7L detroit in it with 1.1 million miles on it. kept building pressure in the tank and blowing it out the coolant overflow when you put it under load. didnt run bad, make oil, or do anything out of the ordinary. ended up being a hole in the headgasket the size of your thumbnail between cylinders 3 and 4. the gasket kit, headstuds and valve cover gasket was $519. then after pulling the injectors out we found the injector cups were thrashed..... and noone has tooling to replace them. Sooo I ended up buying a reman head from detoit... $1500 plus your core. BTW theres 38 head bolts that have to be torqued to 220lb feet.... that sucked! runs like a champ now! going to put a new turbo and shim the fuel pump this summer

we've got the tools to replace pressed injector cups. doesn't do you any good now though. thats why they went to the steel screw in style. so you dont have to pull the head to replace leaking cups.

This motor runs awesome, has had new EGR, injectors, turbo, he spent $30,000 on this thing in the past year trying to fix a problem with the engine not making power, the turbo would cut in and out, only to have them not really fixed and now this coolant issue.
He has ben running this truck now for the past while with this coolant issue and hopefully it has not caused some other damage. If it has oh well it's his money.

If it wasnt for the coolant issue this truck pulls nice. Besides cutting power when you stomp on it.

Well this must be Series 60 week. I got one pushing coolant out of the radiator over flow and getting coolant in the oil. Im going to start with removing the oil pan and pressure testing the cooling system to see where the coolant is coming from.

Oh man! I have some serious liner pitting issues and the block at the very bottom where the upper most o-ring sits is pitted like you wouldnt believe. I dont think this block is any good now. Who knows if one can be salvaged with that type of pitting that far down into it? The counter bore looks fine.

I was told to keep an eye on the Ph level of the coolant, mine doesnt have a water filter. I run extended life coolant now. if the Ph gets out of whack it can cause serious cavitation of the cylinder liners.

good luck

Yup. Thats the problem with this engine. Lack of cooling system service will kill one quick!

Block pitting. Rotate the first and last picture 180 degrees. They are upside down. My bad.
