What's the 411 on 3.0L EcoDiesel ram?

Short story is Ram missed a huge opportunity by letting the 5.0L Cummins go to Nissan. In Europe a VM motori diesel is considered a throw away, just what I've been told... Like anything else I would not be buying the first model run, hoping to replace our hemis at work with these diesels so hopefully they pull though.

Diddo. Iveco/fiat are garbage.

I disagree with the last comment, i was a tractor dealer for years with the Hesston line and the fiat iveco engine is a solid running and lasting engine, some customers have 12000 - 13000 hours and never had the valve cover off them. i might add that they are very fuel efficient.

Maybe on their semi's. But no their passenger/utility vans Iveco doesn't hold a candle to the Sprinter. Same size engine.

The VM 3.0L V6 turbodiesel only came out in 2011/2012, so as I understand it there aren't huge numbers of them in the field. My only concern is that it was designed as a car engine, but a half-ton truck isn't a heavy-duty workhorse so this may be a non-issue.

I have no interest in a half-ton truck with a 5.0L V8 turbodiesel, because the things I tow aren't suited to half-ton duty. And if I'm stepping-up to a 3/4-ton or 1-ton truck, then want and B-series inline-6.

To me, for a half-ton truck, I'd much rather have the VM Motori engine - provided it gets 30 mpg on the highway. If it gets crappy mileage, then I have no interest at all in a diesel half-ton truck.

I'd like to see a diesel Durango. Our hemi Durango sucks the gas like crazy. I was hoping it would pull our 5500#, 27ft travel trailer and it will, but barely holds 110km/h on Hwy1 with a bit of a head wind and only gets 9mpg doing it. Thats with OD locked out

A diesel Durango would certainly peak my interest. Or maybe even better would be Nissan offering the Armada with the 5.0L Cummins.

See thats where I'm at too. I have no interest in a 5.0L cummins. I want a half ton as a daily driver, grocery getter, drive to the mine for my rotation type 4wd. If i need to do some work I'll get one of my big boy trucks.

So proof will have to be in the mileage for me as well.

Interesting points about a high power diesel in the 1/2 ton pickup. You still couldn't really tow or haul much even though it would be pretty quick.

I really thought that Chrysler blew it by not going with the 5.0L Cummins V8 diesel in their 1/2 ton but maybe not.

Mike Holmen 10-01-2013 07:10 PM

Guys its the nissan titan pick-up that getting the cummins 5.0L engine. I rather have the power than have a dodge pick-up chassis. I personally have no need for a 1/2 ton diesel truck, only 1500lbs of cargo and very limited towing capacity under 10000lbs. Remember dodge rates there trucks at 36mpg (dream world ratings) and real world is around 16-20mpg. For the extra costs of owning two trucks you can easily daily drive the heavy duty. I average 10-14L per 100km's with both of my trucks.

I bet that the urea system is fiat design as well. As least with the cummins engine you have some cold weather operation/starting confidence. With the Fiat, I have none. I use my truck for work, if it don't start I don't get paid.

Bonus for buying a nissan, you can probably do a corporate lease for the truck try that with a dodge.[duhhh]

I wouldn't buy a Nissan either. Now if it were offered in a toyota Tacoma or tundra. then we would have a solid truck. But still not interested in a 5 liter turbo diesel that big in a 1/2 ton.

I'd rail the bag off something like a 2.5L I-4 turbo diesel in a 4wd 1/4ton. man would I ever.

magiriano 10-02-2013 07:58 AM

Hopefully the VW Amarok will be made available to Canadian buyers however I won't hold my breath. It should make for a great dd for tradesmen but for towing it seems the big 3 with their HD diesels are here to stay. And so is the chicken tax.

Mike Holmen 10-07-2013 09:36 PM

Ya second the toyota tacoma diesel, but epa will never allow a new one. Tons over seas but nothing here. I'm not over excited for a 1/2ton diesel. I could change my mind if it was around $30k and get around 32-36mpg. Tow a 15000lbs trailer and haul 3000lbs, but then that a 3/4[laugh] Maybe front/rear lockers and a winch would also help.[laugh] Twin turbo/twin CP's would be over the top.[laugh]

I have a 2016 RAM1500 Eco. I no longer tow a heavy load, so sold my 2004 2500 and bought the 1500. On a flat drive from Rathdrum Idaho to Bonners Ferry and back I get 28-29 mpg. The key is flat. 22-24 on the interstate at 75. Thought it was an excellent truck until at 41,000 miles the engine froze. Same thing happened to my brothers last year at 35,000 mile. This is the 7th engine my dealership has replaced. Have to wait 3 weeks to get the new engine. Does RAM have a known problem with the Eco? Any one else experienced this?

7 ENGINES swapped into in a 2016!:o What sort of miles do you have on the truck now? Have you been getting about 40,000 miles per motor or something?:o

I'll stick with my old 1st and 2nd gen 12Vs. I can get 20-23 MPGs around town on some of my 1st gens and they have 250,000 miles on the original motor.
