Hmmm, this is a good thread cause I got the same question, at this point in the year since I'm coming up on a change, would it be worth switching to 5w40 or just keep running 15w40?

Thats a good deal.

I run either the 5w40 Valvoline PB from Cummins, or Rotella synthetic of similar weight. I might put 15w40 in in the summer months, but it usually comes out once it gets cold.

I am running a 10 30 diesel oil in my ford, but that is only because that is what ford put in.. I would personally run a 5 40 or lighter in the winter... 15 40 is way to heavy for winter,, hard on turbos etc

The 'W' number doesn't affect the operating temperature rating. 5W/40 and 15W/40 are the same under operating conditions. The lower W number is just tested and rated better at lower temperatures (5W = SAE 5 at the 'W' testing temperature).

Pick your winter grade and you don't have to change for the season. You can but to no advantage. The 5W is actually better for start up lubrication no matter what the ambient temperature is.

VW TDI get expensive 501.00 or something like that synthetic all year round. Dodge when it runs gets Rotella T from walmart. Though the oil doesn't really ever get changed in the dodge, the motor normally gets torn down again before it is time....

I run the Chevron Delo 5/40 synthetic year round. I don't put enough K on to swap summer/winter.

5w40 Valvoline from Cummins(34.00 a jug) in Calgary, synthetic in the 07 cause it sit outside all year long,15w40 in summer. The 01 runs 15w40 Royal Purple but that will change it's over priced--probable switch to Valvoline when the time comes, the amount i drive it i only put about 6000km a year on the second truck so oil change every 1 1/2 -2 years with the by-pass.DW
