Tires
Whats the latest and greatest for on-road tires? My Nokians are great, other than a tendency to flat spot, which is either causing, or caused by, the death wobble I have been experiencing as of late. They started to flat spot on the rear at first before I had the DW issues, so my guess is they are causing it.
Looking for something that is year round, but good in ice/snow, as I'm sure we all are. Not looking for a MT tire, since the truck rarely sees off the beaten path. I have a set of those in storage anyhow. |
I've probably beat this to death, but I like BFG ATKO's. I don't do alot of "off roading" mostly gravel, light dirt and highway. Get about 50,000km out of a set if I rotate regularly. I have had Yokohama and Michelin and like these the best so far. TOYO M55 is supposed to be a really good tire too but so is the price.. I was a step away from trying the Bridgestone Dueller REVO.

For wear and ride I like Michilen LTX M+S, Even with my welded diffs I have gotten 65,000km's on a set of those.
The BFG AT's look better, but I can't keep a set on for more then 35,000km's, they really hate the welded diff. I haven't had these on my truck yet, but one of my buddies is on his second set and loves them is the new Yokohama Geolander A/T-S |
The truck had Toyo m55s on it when I bought it and I was pretty impressed with how well they gripped last winter and are standing up fairly well to all the gravel towing I do.

Probable going to get 6 new Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour(235/80/17) for the dually this year,the stock Generals might make it to 60k but i don't want to push it though winter since this is my daily driver,i'm at 52K now.I looked at them all and when you have to buy 6 price does seem to come into play-----Fountain tire quoted me all inclusive/out the door of 231.00 a tire with tax/everything.Nokians Vativa,BFG A/T/Michalins LTS M/S were all closer to 300 a pop.My wife's uncle runs these Goodyear tires on all his duallys/trucks and even with a slide in camper he can manage 80K out of a set with proper rotation,fairly good in snow and ice---he lives in Salmon Arm and travel the back roads quite a bit in winter.I never ever bought a set of Goodyear but i will try,might be a mistake but i'll learn.DW

Tires,tires,tires.......I need new ones too......all 6..[verymad].Stupid truck on the passenger side is cupping....I don't know what thats about...

I vote bfg a/ts, not sure how long they last, I seam to burn them up pretty quick but thats my own fault. They seam to have good traction year round. kind of a jack of all trades but master of none thing. Side walls are thick, I had a compltetly flat tire, but it didn't look flat, i just had a vibration lol. I also had some wild countrys for while that I liked but they had a very square shoulder so were supseptable to pulling in ruts.

I was thinking about the BFG's, they seem to be the default tire for most people. I've got about 35k km on these tires, and there is plenty of tread left on them. I have the same tire on my dually with 70k km on them with a decent amount of tread. Didn't realize these tires wore that well compared to most.
The BFG's available in Load Range E 285? My Nokians are D, which I think might be part of it. Plus, they look flat even with 65 psi in them. |

My Cooper STs have been excellent, although they are a little knobby - but for $500 Im not complaining. The other truck has General Grabber AT2's - Im not very happy with them. |
my truck had general grabbers on it when i bought it.
when they wore out - i went to TOYO Open Country A/T's - the toyo tires are much better, smoother ride, quieter, and better grip in the snow. these are the only two tires i have tried. also, a buddy of mine has the bridgestone dueller revo's and he raves by them . . . |
I switch between Nokian Vativa's and BFG A/T's. Between the two the Nokians are far superior in everything but mud. Both tires suck in mud. Of the two I have gotten the best mileage out of the Nokians, I believe I'm sitting at 80,000 km's and there might be another 5000 left on them. The BFG's just suck when it comes to trying to get them to wear flat, your always playing with pressures and the ride quality is just not there after you put some miles on them.
When it comes to tire time....very soon to be exact, I'm going to Nokian again for both sets. I'll run thier Vativa's for the towing/highway stuff and then change them over to the Vativa M/T's for the ugly crap. DOH! I had looked at the tires a few months ago and they still looked good, today thay are pretty much on the wear bars. Its always seems that no matter what I've got that last 30% of the tire goes really fast.
Anybody seen any good deals lately around Calgary? May we should get together and do a group buy! [laugh] Thinking about going to a 265 tire since there seems to be lots of them used. Repalcing 6 tires at once REALLY sucks! |

the worst tires ive ever owned have been these 315/70r17 BFG A/T KO's they havent even lasted 20k miles, and are impossible to balance... unless you like death wobble id stay away. The michelin AT/2's are supposed to be excellent. Im about to take get a set of Goodyear silent armors they get really good reviews for large trucks
