'Nother q' --commercial inspections?
And once again--yeah, I'm busy tonight.
Anybody know or have experience with how Alberta handles engine conversions? Private, no biggie, insure and inspection first, then swap and don't tell.
If I'm gonna use my '82 for work, which I would like to do, it has to be registered commercial and very likely to be inspected at any of a number of scales/inspection facilities. I have searched extensively and cannot find anything that specifically deals with what the inspection includes and what is considered safe.
Gosh darn it, I don't want to buy another truck

not at all sure about alberta regs, but
as a PMVI/CVIP/NSC inspector. there is a 100 point checklist that we go over. the areas include, brakes and associated systems, steering and associated systems, suspension system, fuel and exhaust, batteries and wiring, body equipment, and secondary attachments. Engine and driveline, including mounting and attachment points, excessive oil/fluid leakage, and so on.
This is a reader's digest version of what we do. That said, I have seen numerous trucks with non-stock engines in them, as long as everything is professionally done, we have no reason to reject them.
Just my two cents

agreed. I've only had my alberta CVIP license for a couple years, but its about that vehicle being safe on the road with John Q. Public.
the guideline book I have is about 3" thick.

so you guys figure that as long as the work is well done, and I maintain it to a T so there's no reason to doubt, it should be fine?
Man, that would take a load off my mind. Call me cheap, but I figure if I can do the job with the old girl, even the best maintenance schedule is way cheaper than buying a new truck. I'd really like to get into the market for a house of my own in the next year or two, and every bit helps

Luke, you're actually licensed to do the inspections? I was reading up a bit--sounds like quite a procedure to get and maintain that license . . .

Kudos, man From my end it seems like a pretty steep learning curve, I'd rather actually comply with the regs than just try to stay under the radar, but maybe a little of both is the best way to go

I got the Highway coach endorsement too, I think that slipped through. I don't know sweet all about them really. we got the bus man in the shop he gets them all anyways.
the police service brings their "Intoxilizer" checkstop bus to us for their semi annuals. what a POS that thing is. they'd spend less money if they towed it from site to site than paying to maintain it. I'm serious, tax dollars hard at work.

I don't remember what year it is, older MCI though. its got a 6v92 in it. that leaks....bad. CPS bought it used from a bus line down here after they rode the bag off it. they rattle can overhauled it, sold it to the city for a mint. city spends a ton to convert it to a check stop bus and it fails its 1st cvip badly. I remember that was like a $15,000 touch. rebuild the front subframe. both tag assemblies bagged right out. 2 rims no good. junk. I had to do a winter time field call to it before. brakepot diaphram rotted out. wouldn't make air. thats was just so they could drive it to our shop for an inspection.........

Yikes . . . my brother in law just bought a '66 MCI with an 8v71? in it, stripped out to begin a motor home conversion, then my sister put it up for sale on Kijiji and got double what he paid for it . Everyone has a different idea of what those old buses are worth
