Well I talked to cummins, and there is no availability on pistons right now, and I had a hard time finding availability on any aftermarket ones in edmonton. Everyone I talked to just wanted to sell me a rebuilt engine.
I talked to the people at Armor inc in Red Deer and they were able to hook me up with everything I needed at a pretty decent price and will have it shipped to me right away. The pistons are Mahle, so I guess I'll give them a whirl and see how they do.
I also sent my turbo in for a rebuild, as there looked to be a bit of oil on the compressor side, so I figured I'd better take care of it now. I found a place on the west end of edmonton called Alamo that said they could rebuild it. I haven't used them before, so we will see how it turns out.

Sorry I am late to the party, but if you need in the future, talk to Snedge (Jeff Mumau,, mumau diesel in Pa) he is awesome to deal with, very fast shipping and great pricing. Even for us Canucks, I got my pistons for my race truck from him, everything went smooth
But on that same note Donovan is a great guy and will look after you too!

So what grit would you guys recommend to break the glaze in the cylinders? I have flex hones in both 240 and 320. I haven't really been able to find any info on what to use for glaze breaking, only for what to use after boring a cylinder, where they talk about achieving a plateau finish.

Well I got a little time today to pull a few of the pistons. #1 did have the top ring broken. Glad I tore it down when I did, there is no damage to the cylinder wall. Lucky.

Have you run a bore gauge down any of the cylinders? Post what you find. I would check for cylinder taper. What pistons did you buy? I run 12V rings in all my CR engine builds.
Curious on how the old the pistons look like.
I buy all my pistons from Northern Auto Parts, for around $450 for a set of six mahle pistons/pins and about $120 for rings.
What main/rod bearings did you buy? Cummins only uses a single thrust bearing, federal uses dual thrust bearings. I find that triple disk converters kill thrust bearings, with the extra thrust loading.
I personally run 12V/24VP rods (VE England rods are the best) and would have the block decked. My engines typically range from 0.003 to 0.013 thou cut to clean-up the deck. Also get the crank seal surfaces cleaned/repaired or get a speedy sleeves.
I run 5 thou clearance on the mains and 4 thou on the rods. Much tighter than that you risk bearing failures.

Well got er all bolted back together tonight and too her for a spin. Fired right up and ran like a charm, no leaks or strange noises. Pretty please with how it all turned out. Now time will be the true test, have to put a few thousand km's on and see how it is then.

Just figured I'd post an update. I've got another 20,000kms or so on the truck since the rebuild, and I have to say I'm very pleased with it. I've had it loaded up heavy with the gooseneck trialer a few times, and she performed like a champ. No oil usage, and my milage has gone back up. Only problem I have had is that my rebuilt turbo seems to be leaking a bit of oil, gonna have to dig into that and see whats going on.
