Thanks for the explanation Tate. Maybe I will go with the .10 over. I can increase the timing abit more to make up for the loss of compression and have alittle more leeway if I run higher boost, methanol or nitrous in the future.

Mike, I got a work truck 90% of the time so I am not in a huge hurry. If the cracks in the head are worse and not worth spending money on are you looking to sell that 24V head? Also I plan on putting in a new valve in there is no way I would try to bend it back.

It looks like I must of bent it with the spring compressor, there is barely a mark on the piston more or less just went through the carbon with no damage to the piston. I am gonna pull the valve out today and see if on the head side if its been ran well its has been bent. But then I don't think I would of tore the valve seal unless it was already done and I was quite careful compressing them once I had alittle tension I would tap it with a hammer to loosen the keepers. Oh well I guess at least I caught it before I wrecked it more and I can still blame it on my wife that way I get to spend more money on it.

Nan, I just have stuff just laying around. Its not really for sale, as I want to port out the head some. But if your in a hurry PM if your interested. Everything is for sale at some point in life. I just hate having good parts collecting rust I bought the head off PDR last year. Its a good head, fresh cummins recon head. I want to build a decent 12v, so its just stuff thats available.

I dropped my head off today and like you said Kevin everyone there was nice and knowledgeable. There gonna take a look at it first and see what kinda shape its in overall before they do any work on it.

Also I talked to a few people today about o-ringing specs Harry was one of them and they both said you can only get one size of 24V gasket. He said you can get 3 sizes in the 12V but you need to punch out a few water and oil holes. Just relaying some info I never called a Cummins dealer yet but Kevin you might want to check out that 12V gasket before you put it on.

What kinda protrusion were you guys planning on going with? Manfed said he would do what ever I want. I was thinking of 10-11 thou.

you want 12 thousand,, Manfred has the specs,, use the ones he has. What is the scoop with the 12v gasket? All you have to do with a 12v is cut out a couple of water jacket passages.

I have 22 feet of stainless wire, Im not sure how many feet I need for my head and for Tates head, but if there is enough left over for yours, Ill set you up

Kevin

I haven't compared the two gaskets but if that's all the difference then that's no problem then.

12 thou is the magic # then? They said they were just setting up the jig and testing it out on a junk head and then were gonna do yours later this week. Thanks for the offer, I am going to see what I can find in Red Deer first and then just order some, I can always use it for something. How long did it take to ship your wire?

If the grooves are 120mm in diameter, then we will need roughly 380mm of wire per cylinder. So about 16" with excess to trim on each. So the wire should be good for 3 heads barring no screw ups. Should also be able to pick up lock wire at any industrial supply store, like Acklands.

Kev, did they ever figure out what the plan of attack is on those? I just got home today, so I'm gonna go the block I have laying around see what the bore spacing is. I wish I hadn't thrown out that old head gasket, would've made it real easy.

Is that the thicker 24V gasket you were talking about?

Tate I have my old gasket handy if you need any measurements. I had it with me and was gonna ask the guys at Trac if they needed it but forgot to.

no I used the thick gasket on the '98.5, this is stock thickness 24v HG.

I'll get you the part #s for the thick ones, if you want from the guy I talked to at WC cummins here.

Whats the diameter on the fire ring? Kev was saying that the 120mm diameter was going to interfere with adjacent rings.

So that spec that I was given is clamping on the outside of the fire ring. I thought the o-rings were to clamp down on top of the firering?

You guys putting orings into the block? I found that there is lots of head re-torques and throttle babying with 0.012 protrusion

You guys going with fire rings as well. I don't know you could do both. Fire rings you have to use a copper head gasket and the ring goes into the cylinder, but I'm still learning this stuff.

Which head studs you guys going with? I would run the higher torque studs. I was going to order a cam/springs/pushrods from Haisley but I haven't landed on whether I want to fly cut 12v pistons or get a cam that you don't have to cut the pistons on my 24v. So I have some heavy thinking going on.
