Build closing in on finished

It's been a while, but I'm starting to get down to the last little bits... Simple build (studs, 5% bosch motorsport injectors, colt stage 2 cam - 0.02 over, but with the correct gasket). Truck is an 04.5. I'm starting to think about a turbo. At this time I'm not planning on running a tuner, but may run EFI live if they ever make it for my truck, or, alternatively, a smarty.

I'm looking for thoughts on a single turbo, and why. I'm leaning towards a 64-71-12 or 14. This truck will probably never see a dyno or a track unless for tuning purposes. I'm more interested in tow, DD and economy. Anybody want to throw out some suggestions for turbos etc (and the why's) for me?

Thanks

IB

the 64 is a nice turbo, I personally would go with the 14cm version. It will definatly help with towing (egt's and fuel mileage) with a very small effect on spool.

And if it isnt too late, I would go slightly larger with the injectors. And be careful who's injectors, as not every company has the same results.

IB, keep us posted as to how your setup works out. I'll be freshening up my work truck over the summer sometime, comparable to yours, mostly for towing, built auto trans and some minor engine work while i'm at it.
Cheers!

Injectors were purchased from Exergy. Was told they are brand new units, with the Bosch motorsports 5% nozzles on them. A friend later put the same units in his truck (hauls RV's for a living) and loves them. His truck is stock other than the injectors and 5" donaldson muffler. He really likes those injectors.

I'm also leaning towards a 62/71/14... trying to sort out my options... II or BW S300 (pn 169417).

Considering the price of the BW unit ($720) I'm considering my options. There has to be a catch somewhere for the $800 difference. The BW unit is listed for the L10 engine turbos if anybody is looking.

exergy are good. I firmly believe that the 62 will be too small, speaking from experience

The box BW turbo will be non-wastegated, and is generally T4 flanged. You can get T3 in smaller housings. If you ran a T4 0.91 A/R housing, you could probably be quite happy without a wastegate. If you decide you want one, you'd be looking at an external unit.

Hmmm. I don't think I want to go without the wastegate...

Anybody got a cheap(ish) stock unit to last me a year or so? LOL.

I don't really want to jump too fast into a turbo, but I want to get this truck on the road...

Best price I've found for an II is about $1500. Is there an alternative I should be looking at? I am Scots, after all.

I'm not following you, do you have 2 trucks? An 04.5 and a 2006?

5% Bosch Motorsports injectors must be a typo. Do you mean 50% or 25%??

Running the BMS 2003-04 style injector nozzles with the 2004.5-07 style pistons is currently quite the debate everywhere.
The BMS nozzles have the 2003-04 wide spray angle while the 2004.5-07 nozzles have a narrow spray angle.
I'm not sure I would run wide spray angle nozzles on the 2004.5-07 pistons but many are.
If my engine is ever apart, it's getting the 2003-04 or QSB pistons & then the 2003-04 style injector nozzles.

If your truck is an auto trans, you should consider upgrading it if you haven't already.

If your truck is a 2006 I recommend to go straight to EFI Live.

As for a turbo, if you can run EFI Live you can run a much larger turbo even for towing than you could in years passed.
If you can't run EFI Live and want to tow, I recommend smaller than bigger & I also recommend purchasing a turbo that can grow into twins.

Another turbo option is the ED 63/68/14SS---great reviews with EFI Live/some mild sticks and a built auto-----most can push above 550HP on this single and still run pretty cool.I had my heart set on a HTT 62/65/13SS but this turbo has me thinking.A STEEDSPEED 3rd genner T3 manifold showed up at my door just before Christmas---just looking for the right charger to put next to it.DW

Stay away from the 65mm turbine wheel with a tight housing, surging will be a big problem. Especially on a common rail. Jason can attest to that.

Yup, I have two. An 06 (my present DD) and an 04.5 that I purchased in sad shape. This truck has been used VERY hard. Broken leaf springs, Engine done, U-joints done, more mud than my garage can handle... You get the idea... Oh - and some rust holes... where do you get rust that bad in Alberta to be through a truck which was not 10 years old???

The 5% is not a typo. And yes, I saw the recent debate on angles. A little too late for me to worry overly much about. I've done the double oiling and I am easy on my vehicles. If it cooks, I'll have an excuse to go harder. This was a learning project for me (boy, did I learn... ) and gives me something to poke around on when I have a bit of time.

As far as the tranny - yup, it is an auto. I expect I'll be out of a tranny not too far in the future, but I have a spare (stocker) that I just need to go get. I'm hoping that is one of my "after this" projects... And I might need to put Armor in Red Deer on speed dial...

Yes he will build you the best.
Does not matter the make. Diesel or gas.
